PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kenny Bonnar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Stringer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stringer has chosen Cherokee - Europe as his entrance music. Peter Stringer will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kenny Bonnar!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Peter Stringer!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, John Mangel and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Bonnar looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Stringer looks to throw the jab but Bonnar is out of range.
Stringer tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Bonnar counters with a three punch combo that has Stringer backing up. Stringer nods at Bonnar to acknowledge the strikes.
Stringer ducks under a wild hook from Bonnar.
Stringer tries to close the distance and clinch but Bonnar swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Bonnar throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Stringer changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Bonnar tries to avoid it but Stringer manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Bonnar to the ground. Bonnar escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Bonnar tries to land a front kick but Stringer steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Bonnar throws a nice looking combination but Stringer bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Stringer fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Bonnar tries to work over Stringer's front leg with a kick but Stringer checks it.
Stringer misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Kenny Bonnar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Peter Stringer.
Stringer fails in his attempt to clinch.
Bonnar throws a hook to the side of Stringer's head but Stringer sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Bonnar throws a right hand that Stringer ducks under and follows up with a left that Stringer also avoids with ease.
Bonnar throws a nice looking combination but Stringer bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Bonnar takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Bonnar misses with a hook
and Stringer counters with an inside leg kick.
Stringer dodges the punch combination from Bonnar.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Stringer, right into the meat.
Bonnar swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Stringer decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Bonnar's guard.

Stringer drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Stringer jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Bonnar working for a triangle but Stringer defends it easily.
Stringer stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Bonnar swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Stringer wants to control from the top but Bonnar keeps moving.
Bonnar wants to sweep but no luck.
Bonnar controls Stringer momentarily but Stringer frees himself.
Stringer has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Bonnar is proving hard to escape from.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Bonnar throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Stringer shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bonnar but Bonnar pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Bonnar circles away from the clinch attempt.
Stringer shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Bonnar pinned against the cage. Bonnar gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Bonnar swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Stringer counters with a shoot takedown. Bonnar fights it but they end up in guard.

Bonnar isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Stringer stacks Bonnar on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Stringer!
Bonnar is breathing heavily.
Bonnar is not content to let Stringer control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bonnar is trying to improve his position.
Bonnar is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Bonnar trying to hold on to Stringer's head to control him but Stringer postures up.
Stringer drops an elbow to the side of Bonnar's head.

Stringer is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Bonnar slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Bonnar escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Stringer gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Peter Stringer will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Stringer closes the distance and clinches up with Bonnar, looking for a takedown. Stringer pushes Bonnar against the cage but Bonnar circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Bonnar tries to bum rush Stringer with a series of wild strikes but Stringer uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Bonnar misses with a combination
and Stringer counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Stringer chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Bonnar misses with an uppercut
and Stringer counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Stringer fails to land with a series of punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stringer shoots in looking for a takedown. Bonnar tries to sprawl out of it but Stringer keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Bonnar manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Bonnar.
Stringer is breathing heavily.

Stringer tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Bonnar thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Stringer tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Bonnar wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Bonnar looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Stringer tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Stringer prevents Bonnar from moving into mount.
Bonnar throwing shots but missing, from side control.

Bonnar tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Stringer is trying to control Bonnar's posture but Bonnar avoids it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Stringer's face as Bonnar controls the position.

Bonnar wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Stringer, who protects the arm well.
Stringer manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Stringer in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Bonnar tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Stringer!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Peter Stringer! Peter Stringer retains his lightweight title!
