PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nestor Makhno (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeff Schone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jeff Schone was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nestor Makhno!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jeff Schone!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Winston Howard and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Makhno looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Nestor Makhno seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Schone fails with a takedown attempt.
Makhno tries for a takedown but Schone sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Schone stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Schone wants it to stay on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nestor Makhno. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Schone counters with a single leg into guard. Makhno didn't expect that.
Makhno is trying to control the position but Schone postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Schone slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Nestor Makhno.

and Schone counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Schone.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jeff Schone wasn't active enough on the ground.

Horrible takedown by Makhno or perhaps it was just good defense by Schone which made him look bad.

Makhno throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Makhno tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Schone shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Makhno sprawls well. Makhno wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Schone gets slowly back to his feet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Makhno closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Schone tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Makhno presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Schone tries to hold on but Makhno pushes him away.
Makhno tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Makhno scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Schone?
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Makhno has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Schone's face.
Schone wants to control but Makhno is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jeff Schone will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Makhno doesn't manage to clinch there - Schone circles away.

Schone drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Nestor Makhno has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Makhno closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Both fighters take a look at the clock.
Makhno wants to lay and pray for a moment but Schone keeps working.
Schone is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Makhno has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Schone is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Makhno remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Schone fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Makhno sprawls well initially but Schone persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Nestor Makhno just wasn't active enough.

Makhno throws a sloppy head kick and Schone moves out of range easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Makhno wants to control but Schone is keeping him busy.
Schone is looking for a sweep.
Nestor Makhno overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Schone takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The ground and pound from Makhno seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Makhno is looking to take a break and control but Schone is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Schone is trying to control Makhno's posture but Makhno avoids it.

Makhno tries for a kimura but Schone is defending well.
You can see the frustration on Schone's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Schone tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Makhno easily slips into full mount!

Schone wants to control but Makhno is having none of it.

Schone is looking to get to half guard.

Makhno doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Schone counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Makhno's guard now.
Makhno is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Makhno not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Makhno keeping moving, preventing Schone from controlling successfully.

Makhno shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Schone as he jumps to the side.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nestor Makhno showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Makhno has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
