PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tony Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Giant Kong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kong is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by GIANT KONG. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 22 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tony Mendez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Giant Kong!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Stewart Dunkirk and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kong gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Mendez throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Mendez postures up in Kong's guard and throws a big left but Kong blocks it.
Kong is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Kong wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mendez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Mendez stands up over Kong, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mendez lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Kong looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Mendez in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Mendez throws a strike but Kong rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Kong won't allow Mendez to sweep him here.
Mendez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Kong wants to pass the guard but Mendez is keeping the position.

Mendez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kong gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Mendez controls Kong momentarily but Kong frees himself.

Mendez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kong must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mendez looking for subs off his back but Kong has passed one foot through into half guard.

Kong takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Mendez is trying to reverse the position but instead Kong has taken his back - oops!

Kong really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Mendez.
Kong is looking to control Mendez but Mendez is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Mendez wants to control his opponent's hands but Kong gets his hands free.

I really don't envy Mendez right now.
Mendez manages to reverse the position and now he's in Kong's guard. Nice work there by Mendez.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Kong throws a right hand that misses

and Mendez counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Kong holds on and takes a little breather.
Tony Mendez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Kong wants to sweep here but Mendez controlling him for the moment.
Mendez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kong swivels though and keeps the full guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mendez stands and throws Kong's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Mendez tries to score with some ground and pound. Kong controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Kong sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Mendez is nestled in close to Kong, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Kong is trying to control but can't.
Mendez works his way into full mount!
Kong is bucking up trying to escape but Mendez cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
The referee warns Kong that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.


It looks like Giant Kong has been cut.
Mendez with a couple of short strikes.


Kong is rocked!
Mendez is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Kong is still in real trouble! Can Mendez finish him?


That has opened up Giant Kong's cut even more.
Mendez loads up with a big shot that hurts Kong! He's pulled Mendez in close but Mendez has postured up and lands more strikes. Can Kong survive? More strikes from Mendez and Kong is out! The ref jumps in to save him! Brutal ground and pound!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:01 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Tony Mendez!
Tony Mendez decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
