PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Paul Stewart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steven Angero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paul Stewart!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Steven Angero!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Angero gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Stewart to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Stewart wants to pass the guard but Angero is keeping the position.
Angero looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Angero looking for a guillotine here but Stewart defends easily.
Angero can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Stewart controls the pace.

Stewart stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Angero swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Stewart slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Stewart tries to move to mount but Angero blocks the move with his legs.
Stewart is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Angero's shoulder. That is not cool.

Stewart working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Stewart stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Angero moves in looking to clinch but Stewart pushes him off.
Stewart fails with a takedown attempt.
Stewart tries for a takedown but Angero sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Angero tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Stewart manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Angero shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Stewart pinned against the cage. Stewart gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Stewart shoots and misses

and Angero counters with a shoot takedown. Stewart fights it but they end up in guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Paul Stewart. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Angero drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Stewart manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Angero has Stewart in his guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Angero is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Stewart trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Angero is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Angero has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Stewart can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Stewart controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Stewart fails with an attempt to clinch.

Stewart has taken the fight to the clinch.
Stewart misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Angero.
Stewart tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Angero just stands there and leans against the cage.
Stewart is pressed up against the cage. Angero has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Stewart down to the mat. Stewart avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Stewart shoots in for a double leg but Angero sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Angero has taken the fight to the clinch.

Angero tries to close the distance and clinch but Stewart swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Stewart pushes Angero up against the cage in a clinch.

Angero successfully pulls guard.

Stewart working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Angero working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Stewart doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Stewart manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Stewart passes into half guard.
Angero wants to get back to his feet.

Stewart seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Angero does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Stewart is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Stewart passes the guard and advances to mount!
Stewart prevents Angero from getting the reversal.
Angero regains half guard.
Angero is looking to escape.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Stewart is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Angero tries to roll over but Stewart keeps him under control.
Angero tries to kick Stewart off but Stewart keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Stewart content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Stewart tries to pass the half guard into mount. Angero knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Stewart trying to control the action but Angero is working from the bottom.
Stewart is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Stewart seems to be looking to move to his opponent's back but Angero is holding on tight.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Angero tries to improve his position but instead Stewart has taken his back!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Stewart throws an overhand right that lands on Angero's shoulder, as Angero tries to avoid the shot.

Stewart fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Angero, pushing him back against the cage.
Angero goes for a takedown attempt but Stewart pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Stewart stuffs the takedown attempt from Angero. Angero gets slowly back to his feet.
Stewart shoots in looking for a takedown but Angero manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Stewart's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
No luck for Angero with that takedown attempt.
Paul Stewart has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steven Angero.
Angero tries for a takedown but Stewart sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Stewart misses with a takedown

and Angero counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Stewart pushes Angero off and gets back to his feet.
Stewart changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Angero tries to avoid it but Stewart manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Angero to the ground. Angero escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Stewart tries a head kick but it misses.
Stewart is trying hard to land a takedown here. Angero sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Stewart circles away from the clinch attempt.
Paul Stewart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Angero rushes Stewart and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Stewart pulls guard.

Angero gets to his feet. Stewart looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Angero tries to close the distance and clinch but Stewart swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Stewart stuffs the takedown attempt from Angero. Angero gets slowly back to his feet.
Stewart shoots in looking for a takedown but Angero manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Stewart's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Stewart is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Angero closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Stewart did well to prevent Angero getting side control.
Angero moves nicely into side control.
Stewart sneaks back into half guard.
Stewart wants to control but Angero is keeping busy.

Stewart is looking for a sweep. Angero is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Angero is trying to work for a kimura but Stewart is defending well.
Stewart works his way to full guard. Good work.

I would just about give that final round to Steven Angero.
Well Stewart has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
