PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Randy Skripplenorth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Quintin Vera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Skripplenorth's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Slayer - Raining Blood. Quintin Vera will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Vera gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vera wants to sweep here but Skripplenorth controlling him for the moment.
Skripplenorth trying to control the position from guard on top but Vera is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Skripplenorth drops back looking for a leg! Vera is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Vera manages to kick Skripplenorth off! Skripplenorth jumps back into Vera's guard.
Skripplenorth tries to free his leg and advance position but Vera is retaining full guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Skripplenorth decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Vera's guard.
Vera looking to hit a scissor sweep but Skripplenorth is one step ahead there.

Skripplenorth drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Skripplenorth jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Vera can do anything to dispel that myth.

Skripplenorth wants to pass the guard but Vera is keeping the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Skripplenorth counters with a single leg into guard. Vera didn't expect that.

Skripplenorth is breathing heavily.
Vera is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Skripplenorth slows the pace down in half guard.

Skripplenorth is tying to control. Vera wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Vera tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Skripplenorth wants to take a breather but Vera is having none of it.
Skripplenorth blocks the strikes from Vera.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vera is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Skripplenorth counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Randy Skripplenorth has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Quintin Vera.

Skripplenorth is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Vera bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Skripplenorth's guard.

Vera throws a big right hand that misses.
Vera throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Skripplenorth works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Skripplenorth had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Vera is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Skripplenorth Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Vera's back instead.

A lull in the action here.
Skripplenorth is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Vera is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Vera really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Skripplenorth. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Skripplenorth has good solid back control here.
Skripplenorth connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Vera to escape the position.

Skripplenorth working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Vera is doing well to defend. Skripplenorth seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Vera is forced to tap and this one is over!
