PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joe Farrah (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Clooten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Farrah comes into the arena with Work In Progress blaring out of the sound system. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joe Farrah!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matt Clooten!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Steve Smith and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Farrah tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Clooten paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Farrah swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Farrah stuffs the takedown attempt from Clooten. Clooten gets slowly back to his feet.
Clooten misses with a double jab
and Farrah counters with a good low kick that Clooten was not able to check.
Farrah closes the distance and clinches up with Clooten, looking for a takedown. Farrah pushes Clooten against the cage but Clooten circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Clooten throws a right hand that Farrah ducks under and follows up with a left that Farrah also avoids with ease.
Clooten shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Farrah shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Clooten as he jumps to the side.
Farrah goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Horrible takedown by Farrah or perhaps it was just good defense by Clooten which made him look bad.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joe Farrah. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Clooten slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Clooten throws a leg kick
so Farrah counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Clooten looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Clooten looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Clooten is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Farrah is controlling him.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Clooten has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Farrah wants to control but Clooten is having none of it.

Clooten is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Clooten looking for a guillotine here but Farrah defends easily.

Farrah will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Joe Farrah will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Clooten avoids a kick to the body.
Clooten shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Farrah keeping moving, preventing Clooten from controlling successfully.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Farrah throws a body kick that misses.
A solid leg kick lands there for Clooten.
Farrah closes the distance but Clooten moves to the side
and Clooten counters with a one-two to the body.
Nice takedown defense from Clooten. No joy for Farrah on that attempt.

Clooten throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Farrah's waist but Farrah gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Clooten off to one side.
A left and a right from Farrah both land. Nice combination.
Clooten wants to clinch
and Farrah counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Clooten has his foot on Farrah's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Farrah works his way back into a safe position though.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Clooten is on top in guard.
Clooten is pushing down on Farrah's leg trying to pass to half guard. Farrah is fighting to maintain full guard but Clooten has managed to sneak the leg through.

Farrah is looking for a sweep.
Farrah is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Clooten is controlling him well.
Clooten throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Clooten goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Farrah rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Clooten's guard! Nice work there by Farrah!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!

Clooten tries to roll over but Farrah keeps him under control.
Clooten slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Clooten is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Clooten is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Clooten is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Farrah trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Clooten working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Farrah doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Farrah manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Clooten utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Clooten is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Matt Clooten has got the better of the ground game so far.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Clooten throwing shots but Farrah is blocking nicely.
Clooten wants to work for an arm triangle but Farrah is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Clooten decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Matt Clooten will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Farrah is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Clooten has an Americana. Farrah didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Clooten is delighted and gyrates infront of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Clooten hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
