PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Eric Dang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vincent Smyth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smyth has chosen RZA - Fatal as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Eric Dang!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Vincent Smyth!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Yves DeLean and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dang throws a solid leg kick but Smyth takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Dang.
Dang circles away from the clinch attempt
and Smyth takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Smyth tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Dang manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Dang scores with a jab to the jaw.
Smyth fails in his attempt to clinch.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smyth slips a jab from Dang.
Smyth thows a left - swing and a miss!
Smyth moves in looking to clinch but Dang pushes him off.
Dang walks into a left hand.
Smyth looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Dang is fending him off so far but Smyth persists. Nope, Dang circles away and we're back to standing.
A big left from Dang misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Nice uppercut lands for Dang. That snapped Smyth's head back.
Dang throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Smyth avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Smyth checks a low kick from Dang.
Smyth tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Dang thows a left - swing and a miss!

Dang throws a hook but Smyth avoids it easily.

and Dang counters with a nice uppercut.
Smyth displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Dang throws out the jab.

and Smyth decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Dang's guard.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Smyth with a flurry of punches that miss.
Smyth throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Dang works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Dang keeping moving, preventing Smyth from controlling successfully.
Smyth postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Smyth trying to control but Dang is working from the bottom.
Smyth has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Dang keeping full guard, as Smyth tries to pass.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Eric Dang will probably get the nod.
That's time! Dang's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Dang misses with a right hand
and Smyth counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Dang tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Smyth was well out of range. Poor timing from Dang.

Smyth moves into the clinch.

Smyth pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Smyth keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Dang.
Smyth tries to clinch but Dang moves out of range.
Dang dips to his left and cracks Smyth with an uppercut!

Smyth tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Dang manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Smyth decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Dang knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smyth on the ground.
Smyth not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Smyth wants to control but Dang is keeping him busy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smyth wants to free his trapped foot but Dang is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Vincent Smyth has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Smyth fails in his attempt to clinch.

Smyth lands with a shot to the body.
Eric Dang is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Smyth ducks under a wild hook from Dang.
Dang wants to slow Smyth down by chopping away at his legs.
Dang staying out of range there.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Smyth does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Dang takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Dang misses with the combination.
Dang thows a body shot but no joy.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Smyth.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Vincent Smyth showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Smyth tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Dang paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Nice body punch from Smyth.
Smyth tries to clinch but Dang moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smyth shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Dang eats them both and turns towards Smyth to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Dang misses with a body shot.

Smyth drives through with a takedown into guard.
Smyth loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Dang keeping moving, preventing Smyth from controlling successfully.
Smyth pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Dang is keeping the position for now.
Smyth passes into half guard.
Dang blocking the ground and pound attempt from Smyth.

Dang is not content to let Smyth control the position.
Smyth keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Dang on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Dang tries to get out of the position.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smyth forces his way into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smyth wants to control but Dang is keeping him busy.
Smyth not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Smyth working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Smyth throws a strike but Dang avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Vincent Smyth comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Smyth has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
