The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cruz tries to close the distance and clinch up but Smith swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Smith.
Cruz plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Cruz closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cruz lands in his opponent's guard.

Cruz sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Smith's guard.

Cruz drops back looking for a leg! Smith is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smith manages to kick Cruz off! Cruz jumps back into Smith's guard.
Smith is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Cruz wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cruz is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jake Smith.
Smith fails with an attempt to clinch.
Smith with a poor takedown
and Cruz counters with a nice body kick.
Smith throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Cruz's waist but Cruz gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Smith off to one side.
Dominickoy Cruz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Smith.
Smith looks gassed!

Cruz moves into the clinch.

Cruz gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Smith scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Cruz stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Cruz wants it to stay on the feet.
Cruz tries to close the distance and clinch but Smith swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Cruz throws a head kick that half lands.

Cruz thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Smith if he has to take too many more of those.
Cruz connects with a leg kick. Smith looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Cruz lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.

Cruz moves into the clinch successfully.
Cruz is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Cruz drops down looking for an ankle pick but Smith pulls his leg out and moves away.
Smith shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cruz as he jumps to the side.

Smith looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Cruz is fending him off so far but Smith persists. Nope, Cruz circles away and we're back to standing.

Cruz has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Smith defend it? Cruz steps over the head and cranks it - Smith is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Cruz!
