PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nicoli Value (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alexander Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith has chosen bad company by bad company as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Nicoli Value has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nicoli Value!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alexander Smith!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, George Francis and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Value misses with a double jab

and Smith counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Value is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Value will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Value can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Smith controls the pace.
Smith throwing strikes from guard but Value blocks nicely.

Smith stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Value tries to clinch but Smith moves out of range.
Nicoli Value seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Value throws a series of punches but Smith avoids them all with ease.
Value will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Smith is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Value.


It looks like Alexander Smith has been cut.

A punch combination from Value misses.

Smith gets a clinch.
Smith prevents Value from breaking the clinch.

Smith has clasped his hands together around Value's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Smith has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Smith decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Value fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Smith is out of range.
Value throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Value has a takedown stuffed.
Value is breathing heavily.
Smith takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Smith shoots for a double leg takedown but Value sprawls well. He's pushed Smith's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Value throws a right and a left that both miss.
Value misses with a series of wild punches.

Smith scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Value really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Smith stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Smith escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Smith shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Smith showed some decent athleticism there.

Smith throwing shots but Value is blocking nicely.
Well, if Smith is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Alexander Smith.
Value throws a combination that misses

and Smith counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Smith controlling the action here.

Smith stands up and beckons Value to join him on the feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Smith manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Value on his heels. He'll look to pass Value's guard now, I'm sure.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Smith makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Smith shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Smith missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Smith thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Smith is working for a submission of some sort.
Still in half guard, Smith seems content to control.

Smith decides to return to a standing position.
Value tries to clinch there but Smith circles away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Value.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smith rushes Value and presses him up against the cage.

Smith escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Value misses with a jab, cross combination.

Smith clinches.

Smith manages to break the clinch.
Value tries to bum rush Smith with a series of wild strikes but Smith uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Horrible takedown by Smith or perhaps it was just good defense by Value which made him look bad.
Value throws a right hand that Smith ducks under and follows up with a left that Smith also avoids with ease.
Value tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Smith paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Nicoli Value is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A looping hook to the body misses from Value. Smith does a little dance to reset his feet.
Smith swats away the attempt to clinch by Value.
Value misses with the combination.

Smith scores with a takedown into Value's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Smith slips nicely into half guard.

Value avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Smith.
Smith performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Smith stands up and beckons Value to join him on the feet.

Smith closes the distance and clinches up with Value, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes Value against the cage but Value circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Sloppy strikes from Value. Those never looked like landing.

Smith fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Value, pushing him back against the cage.

Smith pulls guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Smith holds on and takes a little breather.
Alexander Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.
Smith bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Value's guard.
Value knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smith on the ground.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Value being controlled here, momentarily.
Smith lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alexander Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Value falls off balance throwing a combination

and Smith counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Value!
Smith content just to control the position here.
Value takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Value defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Smith.
Smith controlling his opponent.
Smith lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Smith putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
Value is bucking up trying to escape but Smith cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Smith has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smith tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Smith is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Value can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Value tries to buck Smith off but he can't manage it.

Smith working for a submission but Value is keeping him at bay.
Smith controlling from the full mount.
You get the feeling that Value really doesn't like being in this position too much.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith controlling his opponent.
Smith with a couple of short strikes.
Value has given up his back, trying to stand up. Not clever.
Smith biding his time, controlling Value.
Let's hope that Smith has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
