The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Tiny Johnson and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Popko has his takedown stuffed
and Solomon connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Solomon closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Popko quickly recovers to half guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Solomon is pressing down on Popko's thigh, looking to free his foot. Popko is holding on for now.

and Solomon counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Solomon looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Solomon seems to be working for a kimura but Popko defends the submission attempt.
Solomon seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Solomon moves into range and clinches up with Popko.

Solomon escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Solomon fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Popko, pushing him back against the cage.

Popko is fighting off a takedown attempt but Solomon is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Popko to the mat. Popko regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Solomon must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Solomon stands and steps away. Popko gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

and Solomon decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Popko's guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ivan Popko. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Solomon is in close to Popko's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Popko is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Solomon frees his head nicely. Oh but Popko has switched to an armbar! Solomon is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
