PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Pono Reyes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Justin Meredith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Meredith has chosen The Rolling Stones - Paint it, Black as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Pono Reyes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Justin Meredith!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed right hand from Reyes misses the target.
Reyes tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.

Meredith shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Meredith punching from mount but Reyes doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Reyes wants to control but Meredith is having none of it.

Meredith goes for an armbar but Reyes turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Reyes.
Reyes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Meredith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Reyes gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Meredith looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Meredith bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Reyes's guard.
Meredith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Reyes swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Reyes wants to sweep here but Meredith controlling him for the moment.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Reyes holds on and takes a little breather.
Meredith trying to control but Reyes is working from the bottom.
Meredith stopping the sweep attempt from Reyes.
Reyes will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Meredith postures up and lands a big shot to Reyes's brow.

Reyes preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Meredith stops Reyes from standing up.
Meredith pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Reyes is keeping the position for now.
Meredith is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Meredith advances position into side control!
Reyes tries to buck Meredith off but Meredith is having none of it.
Meredith tries to move into full mount but can't pass Reyes's legs.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Meredith moves into full mount!

Meredith wants to take Reyes's back but he can't do it this time.

Meredith swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Reyes is now in Meredith's guard. A big mistake from Meredith there, giving up the dominant position!
Reyes trying to control but Meredith is working from the bottom.

Reyes gets to his feet - Meredith follows without any prompting.
Reyes looks to land a combination but Meredith avoids it well.
Meredith feints and then cracks Reyes's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Reyes down.

Meredith misses with a head kick.
Reyes leaves Meredith with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Reyes tries to clinch up.
Meredith throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Reyes sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Reyes shoots in but Meredith avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Meredith moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Reyes stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Meredith.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Reyes is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Meredith looks to land a left hand but Reyes moved out of range nicely.
Meredith throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Justin Meredith dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Meredith misses with an uppercut. Reyes saw that one coming.
Meredith throws a series of punches but Reyes avoids them all with ease.
A good leg kick by Meredith.
Meredith throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Meredith throws a lazy right hand but Reyes sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Justin Meredith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Meredith shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Reyes as he avoids it easily.
Meredith lands a head kick!
Reyes tries to score a power double leg takedown but Meredith sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Reyes somewhat.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Meredith lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Reyes has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Reyes and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Meredith scores with the left hand. Reyes knows he should have avoided that one.
Meredith throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Reyes sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Meredith misses with a two punch combination.
Reyes showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Meredith.
Reyes chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Meredith can pounce on him.
Reyes misses with a few strikes there.

Reyes closes the distance and pushes Meredith back into the cage.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Meredith just misses with a elbow thrown towards Reyes's brow.
Meredith throws an elbow that misses.

Reyes successfully pulls guard.
Meredith works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Reyes trying to hold on to Meredith's head to control him but Meredith postures up.

Meredith is looking for a kimura here.
Meredith misses with a head shot. Reyes uses the momentum to regain guard.

Reyes working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Meredith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Meredith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Meredith looking to sit in guard and control but Reyes gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Reyes is looking to advance position but Meredith has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Meredith takes Reyes's back.

Meredith looking for the choke but no joy.

Meredith tightening his grip on Reyes, looking for the choke.

Reyes defending nicely against the rear naked choke attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Meredith keeps control of the position as Reyes tries to break free.
Reyes wriggles onto his back under a barage of strikes.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Reyes wants to hold on but Meredith pushes him away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Meredith is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Reyes has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Reyes!

Justin Meredith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Meredith.
Meredith cracks Reyes with a right hand to the side of the head.
Reyes moves away from the strike by Meredith.

Reyes closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Meredith's guard.

Meredith is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Reyes's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Reyes's back!
Reyes trying to get back to his feet but Meredith is in full control for now.

Meredith is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Reyes has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Meredith lands an elbow to the side of the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Reyes covering up well under a series of strikes from Meredith.
Reyes looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

Meredith has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Reyes has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Meredith working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Reyes is doing well to defend. Meredith seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Reyes is forced to tap and this one is over!
