PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Guilherme Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Heartman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Heartman is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Guilherme Santos!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Heartman!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Cecil Peabody and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Santos gets caught flat footed, as Heartman shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Heartman throws a big right hand that misses.
Santos is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Santos manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Heartman manages to get himself to full guard.
Santos in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Heartman manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Heartman pushing the pace here, looking to move to his opponents back and work for a finish.
Santos is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Santos working to try and regain half guard.
Heartman throws a sloppy strike and Santos uses the opportunity to reverse the position! A bit of a scramble here and Santos has ended up in Heartman's guard.

Heartman working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Santos doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Santos manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Heartman looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Heartman working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Santos doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Santos manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Santos wants to pass the guard but Heartman is keeping the position.

Santos wants to stand but Heartman is controlling his posture from full guard.

Heartman is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Heartman not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Santos tries to stand but Heartman is controlling from the bottom.
Santos is breathing heavily.

Heartman escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Santos gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Heartman keeping moving, preventing Santos from controlling successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Heartman striking off his back but it's not causing Santos any problems.
Santos has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Heartman is proving hard to escape from.

Santos avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Santos trying to control but Heartman is working from the bottom.
Heartman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Heartman dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Santos gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

so Heartman counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Heartman controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Santos keeping moving, preventing Heartman from controlling successfully.
Santos is looking to stand up but Heartman isn't so interested in that idea.
Heartman passes Santos's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Santos has one foot on Heartman's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Heartman shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Santos defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Heartman.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Heartman looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Santos is trying desperately to improve position.
Heartman controlling the position easily from mount.
Santos is squirming around, avoiding Heartman's attempts to control the action.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Heartman has hold of Santos's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Santos manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Heartman goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Santos is on top in guard.
Santos controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Santos has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Heartman is trying to control the position but Santos postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Heartman might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Santos kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Heartman had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Santos is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Heartman Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Santos's back instead.

Heartman is persistently looking for the submission but Santos is defending it well.

Santos won't enjoy being in this position. Heartman looking for the choke. Oh... he's slipped the arm under the neck - Santos is tapping - it's over boys! Heartman picks up the submission victory!
