PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Yuri Boyka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diego Rivera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rivera has chosen Mortal Kombat as his entrance music. Yuri Boyka had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 157.1lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Yuri Boyka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Diego Rivera!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Igor Prikhodko and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Boyka.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Rivera struggling a bit here.
Rivera is in a bad spot here and he knows it... just holding on for now.
Rivera is trying to control Boyka's posture but Boyka avoids it.

Boyka is trying to get an arm triangle but Rivera is defending well.

Rivera manages to work his way to half guard, despite Boyka's best efforts.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Rivera tries to roll over but Boyka keeps him under control.
Boyka is just content to waste time from the top position. Rivera takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Rivera bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Boyka's guard.
Boyka is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Boyka throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Rivera escapes and throws Boyka's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Boyka is breathing heavily.
Rivera is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
It looks like Rivera might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Boyka struggling a bit here.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Rivera throws a looping overhand right but Boyka ducks down to avoid it.

Rivera closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Boyka is trying to get back to half guard.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Boyka tries to bench press Rivera off him but Rivera keeps the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rivera closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Boyka is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Boyka wants to get back to full guard but Rivera has mounted him!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Boyka really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Rivera's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Rivera lands a nice shot to the head.
Boyka is in all sorts of trouble here.

Diego Rivera has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Rivera swats away the attempt to clinch by Boyka.
Rivera throws a series of punches but Boyka avoids them all with ease.

Rivera shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Boyka manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Rivera won't allow Boyka to sweep him here.
Rivera passes Boyka's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Boyka is trying to get back to full guard.

Rivera is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Diego Rivera showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Boyka is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Boyka wants to control but Rivera is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Rivera is taking a breather. Boyka says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Yuri Boyka has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Rivera swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Rivera drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Diego Rivera is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Boyka uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Rivera.

Rivera is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Boyka's half guard.
Rivera seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Diego Rivera wasn't active enough on the ground.
Rivera leaves Boyka with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Well Rivera has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
