PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bart Sampson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rocky Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rocky Jones told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Bart Sampson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rocky Jones!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, William Peck and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Jones stands and throws Sampson's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Jones remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Jones swings around for an armbar but Sampson sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Jones's guard.
Jones wants to sweep but no luck.
Sampson looking to sit in guard and control but Jones gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Jones controls from within his opponent's guard.

Jones wanted to stand there but Sampson had control of the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Sampson is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Jones is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Sampson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Jones is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Sampson, into his guard.

Jones throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Sampson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Jones throws and elbow that misses. Sampson uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jones's guard. Nice move by Sampson!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Sampson takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Jones scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Sampson is trying to maintain the position but Jones is very close to passing his half guard.
Sampson is not content to let Jones control the position.
Sampson wants to control but Jones is keeping busy.

Sampson is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Jones takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Sampson wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Jones.

Jones misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Jones thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Poor strikes thrown by Jones there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Jones stands up from mount. Strange move.
Bart Sampson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Jones lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Sampson circles away quickly and effectively.

Jones drags the fight down to the ground.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rocky Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!



Jones drives through and clinches with Sampson against the cage.
Sampson jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Jones walks away with a smile on his face. Sampson gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Jones takes the fight into the clinch.

Jones is pushing down on Sampson's leg trying to pass to half guard. Sampson is fighting to maintain full guard but Jones has managed to sneak the leg through.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Jones misses with a head shot.
Jones unloads with some shots from mount but Sampson bucks and avoids them well.

Rocky Jones is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Rocky Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Jones has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
