PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Preuss Belfort (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Quik (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Preuss Belfort!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ray Quik!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Daniel Franklin and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Belfort tries to score a power double leg takedown but Quik sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Belfort somewhat.
Preuss Belfort seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Quik uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Belfort has time to react.
Quik throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Belfort on the side of the head.
Quik thumps Belfort with a low kick.

Quik feints and as Belfort raises his hands in defense, Quik changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Quik in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Quik loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Belfort throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Quik with a flurry of punches that miss.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Belfort keeping moving, preventing Quik from controlling successfully.
Quik is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Ray Quik hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Quik tries a head kick but it misses.

Quik moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

Quik misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Belfort will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Belfort takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Belfort is breathing heavily.
Quik moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Belfort stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Quik.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Quik scores with a head kick.
Belfort with a lazy takedown attempt
and Quik counters with an outside leg kick.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Preuss Belfort. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Quik has taken the fight to the clinch.
Quik lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Quik.
Quik lands a right hand that snaps the head of Belfort backwards.

Quik gets control of Belfort's arms and successfully pulls guard. Quik will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Quik has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Quik bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Belfort's guard.
Quik's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Quik wants to control from the top but Belfort keeps moving.
Quik passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Quik sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Belfort is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Quik thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Belfort is working to avoid the ground and pound but Quik connects with a decent elbow.
Quik is looking to take a break and control but Belfort is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Quik scoring with punches and elbows.
Quik lands some shots froms side control.

Quik decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Quik darts in and clinches Belfort up against the cage.
Quik lands an elbow inside.
Quik stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Quik tries for a takedown but Belfort manages to get underhooks.
Quik creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Belfort's defenses.
Quik will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Belfort up against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Quik is trying to stall.
Belfort takes an elbow to the temple.
Quik gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Quik working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.

Quik decides to pull guard.
Quik bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Belfort's guard.
Quik distracts Belfort with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Quik postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Quik slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Belfort is not content to let Quik control the position.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ray Quik dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Quik fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Belfort, pushing him back against the cage.

Quik tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Belfort avoids it.
Quik prevents a takedown attempt there.
Quik is trying to stall.
Quik lands a nice elbow.
Quik lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Quik lands a good knee to the midsection. Belfort won't want to take too many of those.
Quik goes for a takedown in the clinch but Belfort prevents it.
Belfort takes an elbow to the forehead.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Quik lands a nice elbow.


It looks like Preuss Belfort has been cut.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Quik. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Belfort tries to break the clinch but Quik is controlling the position.
Quik lands an elbow inside.
Belfort looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Belfort managing to block the knees to the body from Quik.
Quik working some nice short punches in the clinch.
Quik has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Belfort is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Quik tries to land a knee to the head but Belfort blocks with his arms.
Ray Quik seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Belfort takes an elbow to the forehead.
A nice right hand lands inside from Quik.

Quik keeps control of Belfort as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Quik lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.

Quik works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Quik forces his way into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Quik winds up and cracks Belfort with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Belfort is refusing to be controlled, as Quik sits in half guard.
Quik passes to full mount!
Belfort knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Quik on the ground.
Quik working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Quik looking to control but Belfort is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Quik wants to finish this one by submission but Belfort is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Quik.
A nice elbow there by Quik.
Quik lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Belfort hang on?
Quik breaks from Belfort's wrist control and lands an elbow.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Quik has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Belfort's face.

Quik drops a big elbow. That's hurt Belfort! More shots from Quik and the ref steps in! The fight is over!
