PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Paolo Santana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mason Anderson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Anderson is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Simon Says. Santana has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Mason Anderson looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paolo Santana!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mason Anderson!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Anderson lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Anderson swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Nice defenses there by Santana.
Anderson pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Santana back to the cage. Anderson follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Santana blocks a head kick by Anderson.
Santana tries to close the distance and clinch up but Anderson swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Anderson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Anderson throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Santana stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Santana moves out of range of the strikes.
Santana is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Santana misses with a wild body shot.
Santana avoids the body shot from Anderson.
Anderson pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Anderson tried to score with a low kick but Santana checks it.

Santana lands with a nice body punch.
Santana throws a head kick but Anderson moves out of range.

Anderson closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Anderson lands in his opponent's guard.
Santana is breathing heavily.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Mason Anderson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Anderson ducks right into an uppercut from Santana.
Santana tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Anderson manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Anderson throws a series of punches but Santana moves out of range.

Anderson fails to land with a series of punches.
Anderson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Santana sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Anderson somewhat.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Santana shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Santana showed some decent athleticism there.
Santana is keen to just control but Anderson is a slippery customer.

Anderson is in trouble now - Santana has advanced to mount!
Anderson is trying to escape the mount.
Santana controlling his opponent.
Santana can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Anderson is looking to escape.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Anderson wants to hold on but Santana pushes him away.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Anderson tries to reverse the position but Santana maintains control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mason Anderson will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Santana misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Nice takedown defense from Santana. No joy for Anderson on that attempt.
Santana throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Anderson's waist but Anderson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Santana off to one side.
Santana leaves Anderson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Mason Anderson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Santana shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Anderson defends it nicely.

Santana is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Anderson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Santana swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Santana is looking for a triangle but Anderson pushes his legs off easily.

Anderson wants to work for an arm triangle but Santana is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Santana is looking to control Anderson's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Santana avoid being mounted?

Santana flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Anderson takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Santana wants to get back to full guard but Anderson has passed into side control.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Anderson working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Mason Anderson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Anderson misses with a takedown attempt - Santana sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Anderson pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Anderson fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Santana sprawls well initially but Anderson persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Santana has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Anderson is working away from the top position though.

Santana gets back to full guard.

Anderson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Santana has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Anderson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Anderson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Anderson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Santana is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Anderson defends well.
Anderson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Santana is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Anderson is positioning himself well to prevent Santana advancing to mount.
Let's hope that Anderson has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Well Anderson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
