PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mike Coonly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Harper Pool (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Coonly!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Harper Pool!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Bruno Lombardi and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pool fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Coonly avoids it really well and circles away.
Pool walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Pool wants to clinch

and Coonly counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Coonly.
Coonly trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Pool managing to control the position.
Coonly controlling from the top position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Coonly seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Pool for as long as he can get away with.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Mike Coonly.
Pool tries to clinch up but Coonly circles away and keeps his distance.

Coonly has taken the fight to the clinch.
Coonly tries to pull guard but Pool holds him up against the cage and eventually Coonly drops back down to his feet.
Coonly lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Pool backwards.
Coonly goes for a takedown in the clinch but Pool prevents it.

Coonly manages to break the clinch.
Pool avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Coonly shoots in for a double leg but Pool sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Coonly. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Coonly fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Pool tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Coonly manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Pool will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Coonly is looking for a triangle here but Pool uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Pool tries for a kimura but Coonly is defending well.
You can see the frustration on Coonly's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Coonly is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Coonly is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Pool's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Pool is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Pool tries to clinch up.
Nice defenses there by Pool.
Mike Coonly seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Coonly fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Pool manages to avoid it.
Pool bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Pool looking to score a takedown here. Coonly is defending well but Pool drives through and ends up in Coonly's guard.

Coonly working for submissions but it's allowed Pool to get to half guard.

Coonly has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Pool escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Pool!

Coonly is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Pool has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Coonly tries to improve position but can't.
Check out the look on Pool's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Coonly tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
Coonly tries to hold on but Pool pushes him away.
Coonly slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pool lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Coonly slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Coonly has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Pool is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Coonly.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Coonly struggling a bit here.
Coonly gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Coonly has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pool is working away from the top position though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pool trying to pass the guard but Coonly defending well.
Coonly wants to control but Pool is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Coonly looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Coonly trying to control here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Coonly is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Pool pulls his head out easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mike Coonly will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

and Coonly counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Pool darts in trying to clinch
and Pool takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Pool tries to clinch but Coonly moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Coonly shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Pool sprawls well. Pool wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Coonly gets slowly back to his feet.
Coonly misses the jab.

Coonly shoots in but no luck this time.

Pool gets the takedown into side control.
Pool misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Coonly wants to control but Pool postures up.

Pool stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Coonly looking to score a takedown here. Pool is defending well but Coonly drives through and ends up in Pool's guard.

Pool looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Coonly trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Coonly postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Coonly looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Coonly tries to free his leg and advance position but Pool is retaining full guard.
Coonly not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Pool is looking to work some ground and pound but Coonly has wrist control.

Coonly pushes a forearm under Pool's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Pool is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
