PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Donkey Kong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Wiggins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Wiggins told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Donkey Kong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John Wiggins!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wiggins tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Kong counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Kong.
Kong stalling the fight.

Kong has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Wiggins uses from the top position.
Kong really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Wiggins thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. John Wiggins hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Donkey Kong has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Kong keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Kong shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Wiggins but Wiggins pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Wiggins throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kong's waist but Kong gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Wiggins off to one side.
Kong defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Wiggins.

Kong closes this distance looking for a takedown but Wiggins circles away.
Kong dives in and grabs Wiggins's left leg, looking for a takedown. Wiggins pushes down on Kong's head and hops out.
Wiggins shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kong but Kong pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Wiggins lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.

Kong manages to pull guard.
Wiggins throws a big right hand that misses.
Kong throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Kong escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Wiggins gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Wiggins won't allow Kong to sweep him here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Donkey Kong dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Wiggins shoots in but Kong avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Wiggins shoots in for a double leg but Kong sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Horrible takedown by Wiggins or perhaps it was just good defense by Kong which made him look bad.

Kong knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Wiggins on the ground.

Kong is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Wiggins is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kong is just riding it out for now. Wiggins eventually gives up the hold.

Wiggins drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Wiggins jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Wiggins sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Kong's guard.
