PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jex Midnight (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mickey Knox (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Knox has chosen Something I Can Never Have as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Jex Midnight!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mickey Knox!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Robert Douchet and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Midnight changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Knox looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Knox can't do much from the bottom here.
Midnight postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Midnight throws a strike aimed at the side of Knox's head but Knox avoids it well.
Midnight is looking to take a break and control but Knox is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Midnight is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Knox knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Knox defending against the ground and pound.
Knox keeps Midnight under control for a moment.

Midnight looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Knox is avoiding damage well.

Midnight is looking for a kimura but Knox is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Midnight to get the leverage.

Midnight moves into full mount! Knox won't be happy about that!
Midnight breaks from Knox's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Midnight throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Midnight thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Midnight looking to control and managing it successfully.
A nice elbow there by Midnight.
Midnight scoring with strikes but Knox is staying in there.
Midnight breaks from Knox's wrist control and lands an elbow.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Knox is trying is best to control the position here.
Midnight trying to mount his opponent but Knox defends it.

Midnight is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Knox is trying to maintain the position but Midnight is very close to passing his half guard.
Midnight working over Knox with some ground and pound. Knox looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Midnight has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Knox is looking for a sweep. Midnight is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Midnight waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Knox.
Knox loads up on a big right hand but Midnight slips the punch.
Knox tries to clinch up but Midnight circles away and keeps his distance.
Knox moves away from the strike by Midnight.

Midnight looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Knox!
Knox wants to control but Midnight is having none of it.
Knox can't escape the position.

Midnight is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Knox has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Knox!

Midnight wants to sweep here but Knox controlling him for the moment.

Midnight had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Knox defends it easily.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Knox got a little sloppy there for a moment and Midnight has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Knox has managed to get both his arms back between Midnight's legs - danger averted.
Knox not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Knox sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Knox is in close to Midnight's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Knox trying to control but Midnight is working from the bottom.
Midnight avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Midnight has his foot on Knox's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Knox works his way back into a safe position though.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Midnight looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Knox has picked Midnight up and slammed him! Midnight can't keep hold of the triangle and Knox manages to pass to side control!
Midnight takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Midnight tries to bench press Knox off him but Knox keeps the position.
Midnight is working hard here to advance position.

Knox wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Midnight, who protects the arm well.

Midnight manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Midnight tries to get to full guard but Knox has control of the leg.
Jex Midnight overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Knox is looking to take a break and control but Midnight is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Midnight slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Knox postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Midnight doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Knox cracks Midnight with a solid left hand.

Midnight is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Midnight looking for a guillotine here but Knox defends easily.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Midnight throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Midnight wants to sweep but no luck.
Knox distracts Midnight with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Mickey Knox will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Midnight drops his hands momentarily and Knox takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Jex Midnight seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Midnight shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Knox defends it nicely.
Knox throws a low kick, looking for Midnight's leg but Midnight calmly moves out of range.
Knox walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Midnight throws a shot from downtown. Knox moves away and avoids it.

Knox clinches with his opponent.
Knox has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Midnight is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
The referee calls for Knox to work.
Knox doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Knox ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Knox no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Midnight connects with a couple of short punches.
Knox has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Midnight is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Midnight working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Knox's head.
Knox not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Midnight thows a huge punch but Knox dodges it nicely.

Knox is refusing to be controlled, as Midnight sits in half guard.

Knox has his hands clasped together around Midnight's back. He's all about the action.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jex Midnight.
I think Midnight has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
