PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Mayers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mayers has chosen Madbones - All the things she said as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Shirou Masuda and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pettis misses with a head kick.
Mayers misses with a takedown attempt - Pettis sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Mayers blocks a head kick by Pettis.
Mayers is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Mayers swats away the attempt to clinch by Pettis.
Mayers fails with a takedown attempt.
Pettis is looking to clinch.
Mayers bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.

Mayers gets a clinch.
Pettis has had enough of the clinch but Mayers keeps him there for the moment.
Mayers is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Pettis fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mayers, pushing him back against the cage.

Mayers has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Pettis is trying to push Mayers away but Mayers has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Pettis stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Pettis wants it to stay on the feet.
Pettis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Mayers slips under a jab from Pettis.

Pettis gets tackled into the cage by Mayers. Mayers maintains the clinch.
Pettis wants to get back to striking at distance but Mayers won't allow it.
The referee is keeping an eye on Mayers - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Pettis wants to stall.
Mayers is trying to force a seperation but Pettis has the dominant position.

Mayers drags the fight down to the ground.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mayers throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Pettis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Mayers is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Mayers looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Pettis prevents Mayers from getting back to his feet.
Mayers looks gassed!
Pettis wanted to stand there but Mayers had control of the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pettis trying to control the position from guard on top but Mayers is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mayers wants to stand up but Pettis is controlling him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Pettis misses with a few strikes there.
Pettis swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Mayers fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Pettis tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Pettis looks for the body kick but Mayers saw that one coming.

Mayers moves into range and clinches up with Pettis.

Mayers breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Mayers throws a lazy body kick

and Pettis counters by moving into the clinch.
Pettis trying to stall but Mayers improves his position.
Mayers has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Pettis is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Mayers lands a damaging elbow.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Mayers jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Pettis walks away with a smile on his face. Mayers gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Anthony Pettis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Mayers.
Mayers throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Pettis leaves Mayers with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Mayers is breathing heavily.
Pettis lets loose with a powerful body kick. Mayers will feel that in the morning.
Pettis tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Mayers manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Pettis takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Mayers jumps guard and drags Pettis to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Pettis wants to stand but Mayers is controlling his posture from full guard.

Mayers has his foot on Pettis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pettis works his way back into a safe position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pettis slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Mayers has a closed guard, preventing Pettis from standing up.
Mayers controls Pettis momentarily but Pettis frees himself.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Mayers is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Anthony Pettis.

Pettis tries to score with a low kick but Mayers moves his leg out of the way.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Mayers takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Pettis tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mayers swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Pettis fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Mayers has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Anthony Pettis is winning the standup battle so far.

Mayers closes the distance and clinches.

Mayers jumps guard and drags Pettis to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Mayers uses the cage to get back to his feet.
A head kick misses from Pettis.
Mayers fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Pettis moves into range and clinches up with Mayers.

Pettis pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Mayers takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
This has been an exciting period of action!
Pettis lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Pettis takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Mayers looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Pettis is fending him off so far but Mayers persists. Nope, Pettis circles away and we're back to standing.

And that's the end of the fight!
Anthony Pettis showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Pettis has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
