PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hugo Junior (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lyov Kirijenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Junior might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Linkin Park - Somewhere I Belong. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Hugo Junior!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Lyov Kirijenko!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Marco Blurström and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kirijenko listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Junior fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Kirijenko missing with a left hand there. Junior was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Kirijenko throws a hook but Junior avoids it easily.
Junior slips under a jab from Kirijenko.
Junior on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

and Kirijenko counters with a nice double leg into side control. Junior won't be happy with that.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Junior tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kirijenko wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kirijenko working over Junior with some ground and pound. Junior looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Kirijenko is nestled in close to Junior, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Junior is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Kirijenko's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Kirijenko's back!

Kirijenko manages to escape to his feet.
Junior takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Junior shoots in for a takedown but Kirijenko shows good takedown defense.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hugo Junior. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Junior closes this distance looking for a takedown but Kirijenko circles away.

Kirijenko throws a good cross that connects.
Junior doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Kirijenko is defended easily by Junior.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kirijenko misses with a few strikes there.
Kirijenko defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Junior.
Junior moves away from the strike by Kirijenko.
Kirijenko misses with a straight right.

Kirijenko fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Junior to the ground. Kirijenko is now in Junior's guard.
Kirijenko must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Junior preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Junior is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kirijenko wants to pass the guard but Junior is keeping the position.

Junior wants to stand but Kirijenko is controlling the position.
Junior is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Junior lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Kirijenko!
Kirijenko is wriggling around trying to escape.
Kirijenko wants to hold on but Junior pushes him away.

Junior goes for an armbar but Kirijenko turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Kirijenko.
Junior manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Kirijenko manages to get himself to full guard.

Kirijenko is pulling down on Junior's head. It's preventing any offense from Junior, at least for the moment.
Kirijenko is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Junior trying to control the position from guard on top but Kirijenko is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Junior wants to stand but Kirijenko is controlling his posture from full guard.
Junior pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Kirijenko is keeping the position for now.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kirijenko thows a body shot but no joy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lyov Kirijenko dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Kirijenko misses with a body shot.
Kirijenko throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Kirijenko leaves Junior with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Junior shoots in and bounces Kirijenko off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Kirijenko wants to hit a switch here but Junior passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Kirijenko there!

Junior is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Kirijenko to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Kirijenko shrugs it off.
Kirijenko bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Junior looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Kirijenko puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Junior is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Kirijenko jumps into side control!
Lyov Kirijenko has got the better of the ground game so far.
Kirijenko is putting a hurting on Junior here, landing some big shots from side control.
Junior regains half guard.
Junior is trying to get back to full guard.

Kirijenko looking to finish here with some ground and pound. He lands one big shot that has Junior covering up... and two more big strikes land, forcing the referee to step in and put and end to proceedings! This fight is all over!

A less than humble Lyov Kirijenko misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
