PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Clover (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Karelin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Alex Karelin was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mike Clover!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alex Karelin!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Ivan Kurochkin and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Karelin throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Clover misses with a body kick.
Clover fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Clover throws a head kick but Karelin moves out of range.

Karelin shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Clover's guard.
Clover looking to hit a scissor sweep but Karelin is one step ahead there.
Karelin wants to stand but Clover has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Clover might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Karelin stands up from Clover's guard - Karelin perhaps looking for a knockout.

Karelin feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Karelin tries to stand but Clover is controlling from the bottom.
Karelin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Karelin wants to stand but Clover has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Karelin is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Clover is breathing heavily.
Karelin is stalling in the full guard.
Karelin has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Clover is proving hard to escape from.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Karelin drives through with a takedown into guard.

Karelin wants to stand but Clover has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Clover wants to get back to his feet but Karelin is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Karelin is looking to stand up but Clover won't let him.
Karelin stands up over Clover, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Karelin decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Clover pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Clover misses with a takedown

and Karelin counters with a single leg into guard. Clover didn't expect that.
Clover could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Karelin wants to stand and escape but instead Clover has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Karelin wants to stand but Clover is controlling the position.
Karelin has a closed guard, preventing Clover from standing up.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Karelin is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Clover is controlling him.
Karelin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Clover. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Karelin is trying to control the position but Clover postures up.
Clover is standing up over Karelin. Karelin looks to escape but Clover dives into side control.
Clover tries to stand but Karelin is controlling his head.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Clover shoots and misses

so Karelin counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Clover. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Karelin gets to his feet - Clover follows without any prompting.

Karelin drives through and clinches with Clover against the ropes.
Clover is working for takedown but Karelin is calmly controlling the position for now.
Karelin will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Clover up against the ropes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Karelin darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Karelin tries to stand but can't do so whilst Clover controls his leg.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Karelin working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Karelin throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Karelin decides to stand up.
Clover shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Karelin counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Clover!

Clover regains half guard.
Alex Karelin has got the better of the ground game so far.
Clover wants to get back to his feet.
Karelin wants to pass the guard but Clover is defending well.
Clover gets full guard.

Clover manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Karelin manages to get himself to full guard.
Clover pushing down on Karelin's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Karelin tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Clover manages to move to mount!
Clover landing strikes from the mount and Karelin is in trouble!
Karelin tries to reverse the position but Clover maintains control.
Karelin is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Karelin can do anything to dispel that myth.
Karelin looks out of his depth in this position - he's holding on tight.

Karelin is trying to get to the ropes to help him get back to his feet.

Karelin somehow manages to escape the mount and get back to his feet!

Karelin shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Clover keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Karelin can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Clover is looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Karelin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

enabling Karelin to counter with a crisp jab.
Karelin looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Karelin shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Clover wants to clinch

and Karelin counters by moving into the clinch.

Karelin has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Clover is trying to keep an underhook but Karelin manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Karelin is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

Karelin stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Clover shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Karelin fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Clover goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Clover throws a head kick that misses.

Karelin darts in and clinches Clover up against the ropes.
Clover is looking to break free of the clinch but Karelin has double underhooks.

Karelin has Clover pressed up against the ropes. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Karelin pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Clover tumbling to the mat - Karelin dives into Clover's guard.

Karelin stands up from Clover's guard - Karelin perhaps looking for a knockout.

Clover gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Karelin is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Karelin prevents Clover from getting back to his feet.
Karelin wants to stand and escape but instead Clover has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Clover stops Karelin from standing up.
Clover controlling from the top position.
Clover preventing the sweep.
Karelin scores with a couple of body punches from the bottom.
Clover won't allow Karelin to get back to his feet.
Karelin looking to hit a scissor sweep but Clover is one step ahead there.

Karelin scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Karelin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Karelin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Alex Karelin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Karelin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
