PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Robb Spewak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony DeSouza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Spewak comes to the ring accompanied by The German National Anthem. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Robb Spewak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tony DeSouza!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Seu Braga and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spewak will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Spewak enables DeSouza to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Spewak manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
DeSouza wants to get up but he can't break Spewak's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
DeSouza wants to control from the top but Spewak keeps moving.
Spewak is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
DeSouza stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Spewak swivels though and keeps the full guard.
DeSouza trying to control the position from guard on top but Spewak is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Tony DeSouza wasn't active enough on the ground.
DeSouza tries for a takedown but Spewak circles away easily

and Spewak counters with a shoot takedown. DeSouza fights it but they end up in guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Spewak's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Spewak trying to control but DeSouza is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Spewak controlling from the top position.
DeSouza really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Spewak. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
DeSouza not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Spewak works a leg free and moves into half guard.
DeSouza is in trouble now - Spewak has advanced to mount!

Spewak jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but DeSouza manages to avoid the submission attempt.
DeSouza struggling a bit here.
DeSouza looks gassed!

Spewak tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Spewak has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Spewak scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at DeSouza to see if he's OK.
Spewak moves into full mount!

Spewak is working for a guillotine from mount but DeSouza frees his head quite easily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Spewak is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. DeSouza can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Spewak is going oldschool here, as he tries to force DeSouza to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so DeSouza shrugs it off.
DeSouza is trying desperately to improve position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Spewak content just to control the position here.
Spewak can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as DeSouza is looking to escape.

Spewak working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. DeSouza turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Spewak off and cradles DeSouza's limp body as Spewak celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Robb Spewak!
