PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mark Abbott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fight Machine (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mark Abbott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Fight Machine!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Taro Takaoka and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Machine will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Abbott stuffs the takedown.
A swing and a miss from Abbott.
Abbott lands a really nice looking cross but Machine seems unphased.
Machine ducks under a wild hook from Abbott.
Machine takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Machine fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Mark Abbott has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Fight Machine.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Machine gets in close and instigates a clinch.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Abbott.

Machine drags the fight down to the ground.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Abbott throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Machine works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Machine is looking for a triangle but Abbott pushes his legs off easily.
Abbott wants to pass the guard but Machine is keeping the position.
Abbott is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Abbott tries to free his leg and advance position but Machine is retaining full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Abbott controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Mark Abbott has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Abbott swings for the body but Machine moves out of range.
Machine leaves Abbott with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Abbott darts in trying to clinch

and Machine holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Machine jumps guard and drags Abbott to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Machine looking for a guillotine here but Abbott defends easily.
Abbott has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Abbott is fighting to break Machine's control of his arms but Machine is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Abbott throws a strike but Machine rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Abbott wants to stand but Machine is controlling the position.
Abbott knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Machine on the ground.

Fight Machine has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Abbott shoots in and gets a takedown into Machine's guard.
Abbott might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Machine is pulling down on Abbott's head. It's preventing any offense from Abbott, at least for the moment.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Abbott missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Machine thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Machine tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Machine is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Machine is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Machine keeping moving, preventing Abbott from controlling successfully.

Machine is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Abbott misses with a body punch.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mark Abbott dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Machine misses with a takedown attempt
and Machine takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Machine fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Machine takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.


It looks like Fight Machine has been cut.
Machine closes the distance and lands a one-two.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Abbott throws a shot from downtown. Machine moves away and avoids it.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Machine enables Abbott to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Machine manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Machine can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Abbott controls the pace.
Abbott postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Machine controls Abbott momentarily but Abbott frees himself.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Abbott's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Abbott wants to control from the top but Machine keeps moving.
Abbott postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Abbott stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Machine swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Mark Abbott overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Machine can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Abbott controls the pace.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Machine keeping moving, preventing Abbott from controlling successfully.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mark Abbott wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Machine misses with a low kick.
Machine avoids the body shot from Abbott.
Abbott fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Machine on the side of the head.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Machine tries to close the distance and clinch but Abbott swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
A looping hook to the body misses from Machine. Abbott does a little dance to reset his feet.
Mark Abbott is winning the standup battle so far.
Machine showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Abbott.
Machine doesn't manage to clinch there - Abbott circles away.
Mark Abbott seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Abbott cracks Machine with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Abbott misses with a double jab
and Machine cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Fight Machine is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Machine displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Abbott.
Abbott takes a swing at Machine's ribcage but misses.

Abbott gets a takedown into half guard.
Machine trying to control but Abbott postures up.
Machine is breathing heavily.
Abbott looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Abbott looks to land a strike but Machine avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Machine holds on and takes a little breather.

Abbott is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Machine shoots for a double leg takedown but Abbott sprawls well. He's pushed Machine's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Mark Abbott has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Fight Machine.
Machine avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Fight Machine's cut.

Machine throws a hook but Abbott blocks it.
Abbott cracks Machine with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Machine throws a leg kick but Abbott sees it coming and checks it nicely.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Abbott checks a leg kick.
Machine takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Abbott is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.

Abbott is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Machine's half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Machine tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Machine wants to control but Abbott is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Machine is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Abbott's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Abbott's back!
Abbott has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Machine tries to keep control of the position but Abbott is staying busy.
Machine controls the action.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Machine looking to break Abbott's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Abbott remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Machine will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Abbott has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.

Abbott is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Abbott controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.

Machine has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Abbott's body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Will Machine go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Abbott is trying to stand back up.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Machine working for a choke but Abbott is defending well.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mark Abbott.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Abbott, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
