PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gica Ionescu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bobby Chen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chen has chosen Tupac vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Gica Ionescu looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chen throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Chen fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

and Ionescu decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Chen's guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Ionescu stands up over Chen, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Ionescu knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Chen on the ground.
Chen bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ionescu's guard.
Ionescu is looking to stand up but Chen isn't so interested in that idea.

Chen stands and steps away. Ionescu gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Chen throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Ionescu was covering up waiting for the punch and Chen finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Chen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Ionescu shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Chen's guard.

Chen kicks Ionescu off and gets to his feet.
Chen dives in and grabs Ionescu's left leg, looking for a takedown. Ionescu pushes down on Chen's head and hops out.
Chen misses with the combination.
Chen tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ionescu sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Chen somewhat.

Ionescu shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Chen manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Chen has momentary wrist control but Ionescu slips an elbow through the middle.

Chen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Ionescu is trying to stand up here but Chen is controlling him well.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Bobby Chen dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Chen manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Ionescu on his heels. He'll look to pass Ionescu's guard now, I'm sure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ionescu is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Chen is controlling him.
Chen slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Chen wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ionescu keeps working.

Chen tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Chen has hold of Ionescu's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Ionescu seems comfortable defending it but Chen has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Ionescu is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Ionescu is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Chen couldn't care less - he's delighted!
