PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nikolay Baskov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leonard Stam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Baskov comes to the cage accompanied by Nikolay Baskov - You are far from me. Stam is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Tony Iommi - Grace. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, Nikolay Baskov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 10 - 0, fighting out of London, Leonard Stam!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, William Gold and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stam fails with a takedown attempt.
Stam misses with a body punch

and Baskov holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Stam jumps guard but Baskov stands there with Stam around his waist. Stam gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Baskov has Stam pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Baskov pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Stam tumbling to the mat - Baskov dives into Stam's guard.
Baskov tries to free his leg and advance position but Stam is retaining full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Baskov throws a big elbow that misses.
Stam wants to get back to his feet but Baskov is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Stam working for a triangle but Baskov defends it easily.

Stam has his foot on Baskov's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Baskov works his way back into a safe position though.

Stam working for submissions but it's allowed Baskov to get to half guard.

Baskov seems to be working for a kimura but Stam defends the submission attempt.

Baskov is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Stam doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Baskov.

Baskov is looking for a kimura but Stam is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Baskov to get the leverage.

Baskov decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Baskov looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Baskov uses his free foot to push down on Stam's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Stam.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Stam manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Stam tries to kick Baskov off but Baskov keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Stam manages to get to full guard.
Baskov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stam swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Stam is working an open guard so Baskov takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Baskov changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Stam looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Stam is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Stam is trying to control Baskov's posture but Baskov avoids it.

Baskov stands up and beckons Stam to his feet.
Stam fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Nikolay Baskov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Leonard Stam.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Stam throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Baskov shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Stam's guard.

Stam is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Baskov defends well.

Baskov drops back looking for a leg! Stam is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Stam manages to kick Baskov off! Baskov jumps back into Stam's guard.

Stam wants to control but Baskov is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Baskov stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Stam to get to his feet.
Stam will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Stam rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Baskov moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Stam shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Baskov as he jumps to the side.
Stam shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Baskov defends it nicely.
Stam avoids a punch combination nicely.
Stam looks to score with a jab to the body but Baskov is just out of range.

Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Sloppy strikes from Stam. Those never looked like landing.
Baskov steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Stam.
Nice takedown defense from Baskov. No joy for Stam on that attempt.

Nice straight punches there by Baskov. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Baskov.

Baskov lands with a hook. Stam tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

Baskov throws a half hearted mid kick.
Stam tries to close the distance and clinch but Baskov swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Stam looks for a takedown but Baskov sprawls well.
Baskov on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.

and Baskov counters with a nice double leg into side control. Stam won't be happy with that.
Stam is breathing heavily.
This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Stam is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Baskov has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Baskov has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Stam is looking to clinch but Baskov is avoiding it.
Leonard Stam seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Baskov throws a hook but Stam blocks it.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Baskov here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Baskov decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Baskov, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
