These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Van Damme blocks a head kick by Fernandes.
Van Damme sizes up Fernandes with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

It looks like Alex Fernandes has been cut.
Van Damme is looking to land body kicks.
Van Damme fails in his attempt to clinch.
Van Damme tries a head kick but it misses.
Fernandes shoots in looking for a takedown. Van Damme tries to sprawl out of it but Fernandes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Van Damme manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Fernandes is looking to clinch but Van Damme is avoiding it.
Fernandes dives in and grabs Van Damme's left leg, looking for a takedown. Van Damme pushes down on Fernandes's head and hops out.
Fernandes misses with a head kick.
Van Damme connects with the punch.

Fernandes rushes Van Damme and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Van Damme breaks from the clinch.
A jab lands there for Van Damme.
Fernandes tries to score a power double leg takedown but Van Damme sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Fernandes somewhat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alex Fernandes. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Van Damme cracks Fernandes with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Fernandes looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Van Damme finish him?

Van Damme throws a powerful right kick. Fernandes tried to block low but the kick was high! Fernandes was taken right off of his feet! Van Damme jumps in to finish the job and the ref tackles him! The fight is over!
