PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rohan Azrei (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Fitch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rohan Azrei has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Rohan Azrei!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, John Fitch!
The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Nard Betker and Daniel Blasius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fitch bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Azrei is pushing Fitch's head away, looking to escape. Fitch manages to hold on to the position though.
Azrei trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Fitch controlling the position from side mount.
It looks like Fitch might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Azrei pushes Fitch away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Fitch gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Fitch remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Azrei is pushing Fitch's head away, looking to escape. Fitch manages to hold on to the position though.

OK we're going to have a standup here. John Fitch hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Azrei closes the distance looking to clinch

so Fitch counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Fitch controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Fitch tries to free his leg and advance position but Azrei is retaining full guard.

Fitch prevents Azrei from getting back to his feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by John Fitch.

Fitch changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Azrei looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Azrei is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Fitch is controlling him well.
Fitch controls the position.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Azrei is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Fitch really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Azrei. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
You can see the frustration on Azrei's face as Fitch controls the position.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. John Fitch wasn't active enough on the ground.
Azrei wants to clinch

and Fitch counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Fitch looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Azrei delivers a nice body kick.
Fitch fails with the takedown.

Azrei gets caught napping as Fitch dives in and scores a takedown. Azrei manages to retain guard.
Fitch pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Azrei is keeping the position for now.
Fitch not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Azrei is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Fitch's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Azrei keeping moving, preventing Fitch from controlling successfully.

John Fitch has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Fitch circles away from the clinch attempt

and Fitch counters with a nice double leg into side control. Azrei won't be happy with that.
Fitch takes a little break here. Azrei wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Fitch prevents Azrei from escaping the position.
Fitch tries to move to mount but Azrei blocks the move with his legs.

Fitch tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Azrei trying desperately to get to his feet.

Fitch looking to control and managing it successfully.
Azrei is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Fitch takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Azrei is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.

Fitch controlling from the full mount.
Azrei's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Fitch controlling the pace for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Let's hope that Fitch has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Fitch showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Rohan Azrei seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Azrei misses with a series of wild punches.

Azrei wants to get up but he can't break Fitch's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Fitch is pulling down on Azrei's head. It's preventing any offense from Azrei, at least for the moment.
Rohan Azrei has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

We're going to have a standup here because Rohan Azrei wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Azrei throws a jab when Fitch was well out of range.

John Fitch comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Fitch winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
