PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Steve Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chu Park (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Johnson might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to DFD - Bubba Kush. Chu Park will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Steve Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Chu Park!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Park is trying to break free.
Johnson manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Park jumps guard and drags Johnson to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Johnson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Park is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Johnson stays in close to Park's body and controls the position.

Johnson takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Park is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnson is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Park!

A nice elbow there by Johnson.
The referee warns Park that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Park keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Park is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Johnson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Nice takedown defense from Johnson. No joy for Park on that attempt.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Johnson fails to land with a series of punches.
Park tries to close the distance and clinch up but Johnson swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Johnson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Johnson shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Park sprawls well. Park wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Johnson gets slowly back to his feet.

Johnson closes the distance and clinches.
Park is pressed up against the cage. Johnson has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Park down to the mat. Park avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Park feints and then cracks Johnson's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Johnson down.
Park throws a leg kick but Johnson sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Park tries to clinch but Johnson moves out of range.

A jab from Park finds it's way through Johnson's defenses.

Johnson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Park but Park pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Park is looking to clinch but Johnson is avoiding it.
Johnson throws a sloppy head kick and Park moves out of range easily.
Johnson stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Johnson wants it to stay on the feet.

Park takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Johnson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Park pinned against the cage. Park gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Chu Park is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Park tries to score a power double leg takedown but Johnson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Park somewhat.
Steve Johnson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Johnson connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Johnson keeps the fight on the outside.
Park wants to clinch.
Johnson will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Johnson lands a jab-cross combination.

Johnson fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Park sprawls well initially but Johnson persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Chu Park has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Steve Johnson.
Well Johnson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
