Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Angus Monfries (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Richie Strath (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Strath has chosen Parallel Universe as his entrance music. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Angus Monfries!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Richie Strath!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Eliza Hachem and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Monfries.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Monfries decides to stand back up.

Monfries drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Strath looking to control.
Monfries is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Strath looking to control but Monfries passes into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Monfries content to control rather than advance.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Strath throws a strike from the bottom but Monfries passes into side control!
Monfries is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Monfries decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Monfries throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Strath was covering up waiting for the punch and Monfries finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Monfries has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Monfries trying to control the position from guard on top but Strath is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Monfries makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Strath looking for a guillotine here but Monfries defends easily.
Monfries slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Monfries is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Monfries might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Angus Monfries wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Strath tries to score a power double leg takedown but Monfries sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Strath somewhat.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Monfries closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Strath to the mat! Strath manages to get full guard.
Strath looks gassed!
Monfries is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Monfries gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Monfries manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Strath is looking to control Monfries's arms but Monfries gets an underhook and turns him. Now Strath has his back to the ropes.

Monfries wants the takedown. Strath is fighting it off but Monfries persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Strath's guard against the ropes.
Strath is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Monfries accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Strath is trying to control the position but Monfries postures up.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Angus Monfries just wasn't active enough.

Monfries wants the takedown. Strath is fighting it off but Monfries persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Strath's guard against the ropes.

Monfries pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Strath is keeping the position for now.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Monfries decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Strath, up you get!

Monfries has Strath pressed up against the ropes. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Monfries pulls back from the ropes and twists to the side, sending Strath tumbling to the mat - Monfries dives into Strath's guard.

Strath is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Monfries is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Monfries postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Monfries is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

We're going to have a standup here because Angus Monfries wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Strath tries to clinch there but Monfries circles away.
Strath throws a front kick aimed at Monfries's knee but Monfries avoids it well.
Monfries fails with a takedown attempt.
Strath tries to close the distance and clinch up but Monfries swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Strath tries to keep at a distance but Monfries has taken the fight into the clinch.
Strath misses with a punch on the inside.

Monfries has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Strath regains guard immediately.
Monfries is stalling in the full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Monfries makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Strath goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Strath fails with a takedown attempt.
Monfries has a takedown stuffed.
Monfries misses with a takedown attempt - Strath sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Strath misses with the combination.
Monfries tries for a takedown but Strath sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Angus Monfries. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Strath can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Monfries controls the pace.
Angus Monfries overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Angus Monfries.

Monfries is looking to take a break and control but Strath is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Monfries has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Strath gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
