Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Maxime Oppong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter McCool (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McCool has chosen I'm Shipping Up to Boston as his entrance music. Peter McCool has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Maxime Oppong's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Maxime Oppong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Peter McCool!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, David Schapiro and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McCool gets a double leg takedown into Oppong's guard.
Oppong tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
McCool is fighting to break Oppong's control of his arms but Oppong is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
McCool trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Oppong managing to control the position.
McCool stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Oppong swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Oppong keeping moving, preventing McCool from controlling successfully.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

McCool throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Oppong was covering up waiting for the punch and McCool finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Oppong seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Oppong's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
McCool wants to pass the guard but Oppong is keeping the position.
McCool is looking to work some ground and pound but Oppong has wrist control.
Oppong is pulling down on McCool's head. It's preventing any offense from McCool, at least for the moment.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
McCool trying to control the position from guard on top but Oppong is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Oppong looks to land a combination but McCool avoids it well.
A telegraphed right hand from McCool misses the target.
Oppong throws a series of punches but McCool avoids them all with ease.

McCool forces Oppong back against the cage and clinches.

Oppong escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

McCool misses with a wild body shot.
Oppong digs a good body shot into McCool's ribs.
Maxime Oppong is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Oppong pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces McCool back to the cage. Oppong follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
McCool just misses with a punch to the body.
McCool throws a poor cross that misses
and Oppong counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps McCool thinking.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McCool moves out of range of the strikes.
McCool looks to clinch
and Oppong counters with a three punch combo that has McCool backing up. McCool nods at Oppong to acknowledge the strikes.
Oppong throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
McCool tries to clinch but Oppong moves out of range.
Oppong uses good head movement to avoid the hook from McCool.
Oppong lands a right hook to the body.

McCool tries to clinch but Oppong is having none of it.
Oppong rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but McCool moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

McCool fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Oppong sprawls well initially but McCool persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
McCool has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
McCool is keen to just control but Oppong is a slippery customer.
Oppong has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. McCool is working away from the top position though.
McCool is trying to control the action in half guard but Oppong is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

McCool makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Oppong is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
McCool stands and throws Oppong's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Oppong manages to work his way to half guard, despite McCool's best efforts.

McCool is working for a kimura but Oppong is defending it quite comfortably.
McCool wants to pass to mount but Oppong is defending the position.
Oppong is refusing to be controlled, as McCool sits in half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

McCool is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Oppong sees it coming and defends easily.
Oppong has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. McCool is working away from the top position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Maxime Oppong will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Oppong throws a right and a left that McCool avoids nicely.
Oppong keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
McCool throws a looping overhand right but Oppong ducks down to avoid it.
McCool misses with a shot to the body
and Oppong counters with a series of strikes. McCool will be more careful next time no doubt.

Oppong gets caught flat footed, as McCool shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Peter McCool has got the better of the ground game so far.
McCool is pushing down on Oppong's leg trying to pass to half guard. Oppong is fighting to maintain full guard but McCool has managed to sneak the leg through.
McCool thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Oppong's head.

Oppong is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

McCool is working for a submission of some sort.
McCool with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

McCool is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Oppong trying to control but McCool postures up.
Oppong is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because McCool is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Oppong tries to roll over but McCool keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Oppong desperately trying to maintain half guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

McCool throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Oppong tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. McCool is in Oppong's guard.
Oppong pulls McCool in close to prevent any damage.
McCool wants to control from the top but Oppong keeps moving.
Oppong is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

McCool looks to score with a jab to the body but Oppong is just out of range.

McCool shoots in and bounces Oppong off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Oppong holds on and takes a little breather.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

McCool rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Oppong counters with a three punch combo that has McCool backing up. McCool nods at Oppong to acknowledge the strikes.

McCool is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Oppong's half guard.

McCool is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Oppong holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

McCool is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Oppong is positioning himself well to prevent McCool advancing to mount.

Oppong is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of McCool's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take McCool's back!

McCool drops back looking for a leg! Oppong is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Oppong manages to kick McCool off! McCool jumps back into Oppong's guard.
McCool takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

McCool is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

McCool manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Oppong on his heels. He'll look to pass Oppong's guard now, I'm sure.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
McCool lands a jab to Oppong's midsection.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Maxime Oppong.
I think Oppong has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
