PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chester Gates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dj Stenner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gates comes into the arena with 9 Piece blaring out of the sound system. Stenner is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Escapado - Solange Du Weisst. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chester Gates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dj Stenner!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Reed Andrews and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stenner has a takedown stuffed.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gates is defended easily by Stenner.
Gates looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Stenner misses with a takedown

and Gates counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Stenner!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gates looking to control and managing it successfully.

Gates is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Stenner to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Stenner shrugs it off.
Stenner is working to get back to half guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gates avoids the attempt from Stenner to control.
Gates takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Stenner with a nice cross.


It looks like Chester Gates has been cut.

Gates shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Stenner is trying to defend but Gates finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Gates controlling the action here.
Gates wants to get back to his feet.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Stenner actively working from the bottom here.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gates content to control rather than advance.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

We're going to have a standup here because Chester Gates wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Gates misses with the body kick
and Stenner counters with a left and a right that stings Gates.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Chester Gates will probably get the nod.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Gates is looking to slow Stenner down with leg kicks.
Gates misses with a head kick.
Stenner throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Gates stuffs the takedown attempt from Stenner. Stenner gets slowly back to his feet.
Stenner closes the distance and clinches up with Gates, looking for a takedown. Stenner pushes Gates against the cage but Gates circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Stenner shoots in looking for a takedown but Gates manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Stenner's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Chester Gates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dj Stenner.
Sloppy strikes from Gates. Those never looked like landing.
Gates tries a head kick but it misses.
Stenner takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Gates fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Gates slaps away a takedown attempt from Stenner, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Gates leaves Stenner with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Stenner is breathing heavily.

Gates stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gates wants it to stay on the feet.
Gates throws a right and a left that both miss.

Gates throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Stenner tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Gates is in Stenner's guard.

Stenner is looking for a triangle here but Gates uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Gates stands up.

Gates looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Stenner!

Stenner is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Stenner wants to hold on but Gates pushes him away.
Gates controlling from mount.

Stenner gets back to half guard.

Gates decides to stand up.
Stenner shoots in looking for a takedown but Gates manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Stenner's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Gates tries to clinch but Stenner moves out of range.

Gates drives through with a takedown into guard.

Stenner is working an open guard so Gates takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Stenner shoots in but no luck this time.
Stenner has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Stenner there as he acknowledges the shot.
No joy there for Stenner, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Nice uppercut there from Stenner.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Gates showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Stenner.
Gates cracks Stenner with a good jab.
Gates lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Stenner circles away quickly and effectively.
Gates misses with a straight right.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Nice takedown defense from Gates. No joy for Stenner on that attempt.
No joy there for Gates, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Gates fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Gates throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chester Gates dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Chester Gates's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


A right-left combo lands from Gates.
Gates throws a body kick that misses.
Stenner tries to clinch but Gates is having none of it.
Chester Gates seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Stenner is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gates sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Stenner shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Gates as he avoids it easily.
Stenner dodges the punch combination from Gates.
Gates stalks Stenner and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Stenner's face. Stenner staggers backwards, shaken.
Gates throws a series of strikes that have Stenner backpedaling.
Stenner fails with a takedown attempt.
Chester Gates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dj Stenner.
Gates rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Stenner moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Stenner throws a series of punches but Gates avoids them all with ease.
Stenner takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Gates tries to bum rush Stenner with a series of wild strikes but Stenner uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Stenner takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Gates feints and as Stenner raises his hands in defense, Gates changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Gates has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Stenner is proving hard to escape from.

Stenner isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Gates stacks Stenner on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Gates!

Stenner tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Stenner is looking to get back to his feet here but Gates is keeping cool and he's managed to take Stenner's back.
Stenner trying to control but not successfully.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gates slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Stenner trying to get back to his feet but Gates is in full control for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
The referee is taking a good look at Stenner as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Gates!
Chester Gates overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Gates just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
Dj Stenner has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Stenner just trying to survive but Gates is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.

And that's the end of the fight!
Chester Gates showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Gates has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
