The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big left from Herdy misses.
Van Dam misses with a hook.
Herdy throws a body punch but Van Dam moves out of range.

Herdy displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Van Dam throws out the jab.

Van Dam gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Van Dam bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Herdy's guard.

Herdy lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Van Dam!

Herdy has hold of Van Dam's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Van Dam manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Van Dam can do anything to dispel that myth.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Herdy moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Van Dam has worked his arm free - good work by Van Dam!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Van Dam is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Herdy wants to pass the guard but Van Dam is defending well.

Van Dam fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Herdy manages to avoid it.

Van Dam throws out a loose jab but Herdy uses good head movement to avoid it.

Van Dam closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Van Dam lands in his opponent's guard.

Van Dam really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Herdy. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Herdy drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Herdy jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Herdy is looking to advance position but Van Dam has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Van Dam cracks Herdy with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
