The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shirley has his takedown stuffed
and Phatz counters with a head kick. That will keep Shirley thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Phatz misses with a low kick.
Shirley looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Phatz is fending him off so far but Shirley persists. Nope, Phatz circles away and we're back to standing.
Shirley shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for LaVern Shirley. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Shirley shoots for a double leg takedown but Phatz sprawls well. He's pushed Shirley's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Phatz throws a solid leg kick but Shirley takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Phatz.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Shirley is defended easily by Phatz.
Shirley shoots in looking for a takedown but Phatz manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Shirley's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Shirley changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Phatz tries to avoid it but Shirley manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Phatz to the ground. Phatz escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Shirley will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Phatz throws a nice head kick!

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Phatz throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Phatz lands a head kick!
Phatz keeps Shirley at a distance using the push kick.
An inside leg kick lands from Phatz.
Phatz throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
A chopping leg kick lands by Phatz.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Phatz has taken the fight to the clinch.
Phatz throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Shirley blocks it with crossed arms.
Shirley managing to block the knees to the body from Phatz.
Shirley avoiding damage as Phatz throws knees to the body.
Phatz misses with a knee to the head.
Phatz gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Shirley.
Phatz prevents a takedown attempt there.

Phatz connects with a nasty looking knee right to Shirley's face.

Phatz breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Shirley tries to score a power double leg takedown but Phatz sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Shirley somewhat.
Phatz lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Shirley has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Phatz.

Shirley closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Shirley lands in his opponent's guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Shirley is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Phatz is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Phatz has escaped and now he's on top!
Phatz content to stall in guard here.

Phatz decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Shirley, up you get!

Shirley decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Shirley wants to work for an arm triangle but Phatz is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Shirley looking for a submission but Phatz manages to get full guard, putting an end to that submission attempt.

Shirley has gone for a leg lock! Phatz slips out almost immediately though and dives into Shirley's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shirley working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Phatz doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Phatz manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Shirley has his foot on Phatz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Phatz works his way back into a safe position though.
Shirley can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Phatz controls the pace.

Shirley has his feet on Phatz's thighs here. He's pushed Phatz off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Phatz screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
