The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn missing with a left hand there. Diaz was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
No joy there for Penn, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Diaz shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Penn as he jumps to the side.

Penn throws a jab when Diaz was well out of range.
Diaz shoots in looking for a takedown but Penn manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Diaz's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Diaz is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Penn pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Diaz isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Penn stacks Diaz on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Penn!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Penn is nestled in close to Diaz, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Diaz is looking to get back to full guard here but Penn has managed to pass to side control instead.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Penn connects with a nice short shot to Diaz's temple.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Diaz tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Penn wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Diaz is desperately trying to improve his position but Penn has a good base and remains in mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Diaz's face.

It looks like Rick Diaz has been cut.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Penn is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Penn breaks from Diaz's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Diaz tries to reverse the position but Penn maintains control.
Penn tries to control but Diaz wriggling away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Diaz glances at the clock... BAM! Penn nails him with a big right hand! A momentary lapse in concentration sends Diaz crashing to the mat! The referee steps in and this one is over! Damn, Diaz is out of it, he thinks the ref is his opponent!
