PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Taz Devil (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kenny Gomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gomi is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Slaap lekker!. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 11 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Taz Devil!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kenny Gomi!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Devil throws a solid leg kick but Gomi takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Devil.
A shot to the body from Devil misses
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Gomi cracks Devil with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Devil slips under a jab from Gomi.

Gomi drives through with a takedown into Devil's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Gomi trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Gomi has gone for a leg lock! Devil slips out almost immediately though and dives into Gomi's guard.

Gomi throws his legs up looking for a submission but Devil uses it to pass to side control.
Gomi is trying to get back to half guard.
Gomi manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Gomi wants to lay and pray for a moment but Devil keeps working.
Devil keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Gomi looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Gomi frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Devil tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Devil is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Gomi tries to control but Devil wriggling away.

Gomi goes for an armbar but Devil turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Devil.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Devil controlling from the top position.

Gomi throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Devil escapes and throws Gomi's legs to the side, diving into side control!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Devil decides to stand up, so the ref orders Gomi to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Devil thows a body shot but no joy.
Gomi throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Devil misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Gomi.
Gomi throws a low kick, looking for Devil's leg but Devil calmly moves out of range.
Devil motions for Gomi to come forward. Devil throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Gomi uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Devil.

Gomi darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Gomi looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Gomi is looking to advance position but Devil won't allow it.
Devil is trying to stand.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Gomi wants to work for an arm triangle but Devil is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Gomi thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kenny Gomi dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Gomi throws a head kick that misses
and Devil counters with a nice uppercut.
Gomi fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Devil checks it well.
Gomi defending well as Devil loads up on a big left hand.
Devil misses with an uppercut.
Gomi throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Devil lands a body shot.
Gomi lands a nice shot to the body.
Devil misses with a leg kick.
Devil connects with a solid leg kick.
Gomi misses with an uppercut. Devil saw that one coming.
Kenny Gomi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gomi swings for the body but Devil moves out of range.
A looping hook to the body misses from Devil. Gomi does a little dance to reset his feet.

Nice shot lands for Gomi.
Devil displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Gomi throws out the jab.
Devil throws a sloppy head kick and Gomi moves out of range easily.
Devil throws a leg kick but Gomi moved away.
Gomi throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Devil keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Gomi misses with a straight right.
Gomi smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Devil lands a jab to Gomi's midsection.
Devil throws out a powerful jab.
Devil staying out of range there.
Gomi shoots in looking for a takedown. Devil tries to sprawl out of it but Gomi keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Devil manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gomi wants to slow Devil down by chopping away at his legs.
Devil tries a head kick but it misses.
Gomi avoids the body shot from Devil.
Devil takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Gomi shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Devil wants to stand but Gomi is controlling the position.
Gomi throws an elbow that misses. Devil uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Gomi's guard. Nice move by Devil!

Gomi is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Devil is aware though and is defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gomi is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Devil defends well.
Gomi bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Devil's guard.

Gomi wants to pass the guard but Devil is keeping the position.
Gomi has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Gomi throws a big elbow that misses.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Gomi wants to control from the top but Devil keeps moving.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gomi postures up in Devil's guard and throws a big left but Devil blocks it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kenny Gomi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Devil is looking to improve his position but Gomi isn't that keen on the idea.

Devil avoids a series of strikes thrown by Gomi.
Kenny Gomi is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Kenny Gomi has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gomi takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Devil is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Gomi controlling the pace for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Kenny Gomi.
Gomi takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

Gomi closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Devil being controlled for a moment.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Gomi tries to advance to mount but Devil denies him.
Taz Devil has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kenny Gomi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Gomi winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
