PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Wes Weddle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lawrence Trainor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Weddle comes to the cage accompanied by remember the name - fort minor. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Wes Weddle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lawrence Trainor!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Weddle avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Weddle changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Trainor looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Trainor is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Trainor is trying to get back to half guard.
Trainor is not content to let Weddle control the position.
Weddle throws an elbow but Trainor slips to the side and avoids it well.
Weddle working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.

Weddle is trying to get an arm triangle but Trainor is defending well.
Trainor is trying to improve his position.
Weddle in side control, throwing shots but Trainor defends.

Weddle creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Trainor sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Trainor is trying to control Weddle's posture but Weddle avoids it.

Weddle misses with the ground and pound.
Trainor tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Weddle wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Weddle sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Trainor is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Trainor dodges the ground and pound from Weddle.
Trainor on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Trainor wants to get back to his feet.

Weddle wants to lay and pray for a moment but Trainor keeps working.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Weddle lands some shots froms side control.
Trainor can't do much from the bottom here.
Weddle scores with punches from side control.
Weddle landing a few strikes.

Weddle thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Weddle in side control, throwing shots but Trainor defends.
Trainor is trying to control Weddle's posture but Weddle avoids it.

Weddle scores with a couple of short elbows.
Trainor is looking for a sweep.
Weddle lands some shots froms side control.
Trainor tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The referee asks Weddle politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Weddle prefers to stall for the moment though.
Trainor regains half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Trainor can do anything to dispel that myth.

Weddle is trying to work for a kimura but Trainor is defending well.
Trainor tries to roll over but Weddle keeps him under control.

Weddle prevents Trainor from standing back up.
Trainor keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Weddle is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Weddle is working for a kimura but Trainor is defending it quite comfortably.
Weddle thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action!


Weddle swats away the attempt to clinch by Trainor.
Trainor takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Weddle throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Trainor fails in his attempt to clinch.
Weddle swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Trainor shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Weddle but Weddle pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Trainor moves in looking to clinch but Weddle pushes him off.
Weddle will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Weddle rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Trainor moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Trainor rushes Weddle and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Trainor with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Weddle has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Trainor avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Weddle's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Trainor tries to clinch up but Weddle circles away and keeps his distance.
Wes Weddle seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Weddle moves into range and clinches up with Trainor.
Weddle tries to break free but Trainor pushes him back against the cage.
Trainor keeps control of Weddle as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Weddle struggles to land a body shot inside as Trainor controls his hands.
Weddle lands a nice shot to the body.
A hook to the body from Weddle.
Trainor tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Trainor misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Weddle.
Trainor using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Weddle has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Trainor prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wes Weddle. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Weddle breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Weddle throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Trainor's waist but Trainor gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Weddle off to one side.

and Trainor counters by moving into the clinch.
Trainor is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Weddle tries to circle away but Trainor has him pinned against the cage.

Trainor tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Weddle avoids it.
Weddle on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Trainor is trying to drag Weddle to the mat but Weddle just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Trainor is breathing heavily.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Weddle pulls guard effortlessly.

Weddle is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Weddle tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Weddle has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Trainor should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Weddle has tightened it up now! Trainor should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Wes Weddle!
Wes Weddle was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
