The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Menochi shoots in for a takedown but Couture shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Menochi fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Couture avoids it really well and circles away.
Couture throws a body punch but Menochi moves out of range.

The fight stays on the outside here - Menochi looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Couture tries to throw a body punch but Menochi avoids it by throwing Couture back against the cage.

Palate Menochi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Couture loads up on a big right hand but Menochi slips the punch.

Menochi is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Couture fails in his attempt to clinch.
Couture has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Menochi finds it's way round the side to connect with Couture's head.
Couture is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

and Menochi counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Couture lands a right hook to the body.

Menochi closes the distance and clinches.

This has been an exciting period of action!
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Couture is looking for a sweep. Menochi is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Palate Menochi decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
