PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Captain Morgan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Morgan kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is Colt 45. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Captain Morgan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Alyssa Summers and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Morgan fails with an attempt to clinch.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Johnson.
Morgan closes this distance looking for a takedown but Johnson circles away.
Morgan shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Johnson pinned against the cage. Johnson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Johnson misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Morgan shoots in for a double leg but Johnson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Captain Morgan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Johnson lands a head kick. Morgan smiles back at him and beckons him forward.


It looks like Captain Morgan has been cut.
Morgan tries to clinch there but Johnson circles away.
Morgan scores with a punch to the head.

Johnson closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Morgan looks to move to half guard but instead Johnson has passed into mount! Damn!
Johnson controlling the pace for now.

Johnson is standing up, even though he is in mount.
Morgan looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Morgan shoots and misses

and Johnson holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Morgan tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Johnson is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Morgan jumps guard but Johnson stands there with Morgan around his waist. Morgan gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Morgan wants to break free but Johnson has control.

Johnson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Johnson takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Morgan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Johnson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Morgan's guard now.
Johnson trying to control the position from guard on top but Morgan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Johnson won't allow Morgan to sweep him here.

Morgan isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Johnson stacks Morgan on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Johnson!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
Morgan sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Morgan makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Morgan.

Morgan is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Morgan is breathing heavily.
Morgan tries to roll over but Johnson keeps him under control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson tries to pass to full mount but Morgan defends it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Well, if Johnson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Morgan gets a takedown into half guard.

Johnson has one foot on Morgan's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

so Johnson counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Morgan has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Johnson is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Morgan.
A lull in the action here as Johnson stalls from top position.

Johnson stands up and we're back to a striking position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
Morgan swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Morgan wants to clinch but Johnson slips to the side

and Johnson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Morgan's guard.

James Johnson has got the better of the ground game so far.

Morgan escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Johnson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Johnson wants to get up but he can't break Morgan's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Morgan regains half guard.
Morgan wants to improve his position but Johnson is controlling well.
Morgan tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Morgan tries to roll over but Johnson keeps him under control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

James Johnson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

and Johnson counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Johnson must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Morgan had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Johnson is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Morgan Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Johnson's back instead.

Johnson is having to fend off submission attempts from Morgan, who is looking to sink in the choke. Morgan doesn't have the hooks in though and Johnson manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.

Johnson tries to advance to mount but Morgan denies him.

and Johnson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Morgan's guard.

Morgan throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Johnson escapes and throws Morgan's legs to the side, diving into side control!

James Johnson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Johnson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
