PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Pete Merrill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Wheeler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ben Wheeler!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Arvi Lind and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Merrill moves out of range of the strikes.

Merrill moves into the clinch.
Wheeler tries to score a body lock takedown but Merrill shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Merrill manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Merrill scores a nice knee to the body.

Wheeler throws the left hand but Merrill avoids the punch easily.

Wheeler walks forward, straight into a front kick from Merrill.
Merrill misses with a head kick.

Merrill gets a double leg takedown into Wheeler's guard.
Merrill is breathing heavily.
Merrill postures up in Wheeler's guard and throws a big left but Wheeler blocks it.
Wheeler preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Merrill loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Merrill wants to stand and escape but instead Wheeler has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Merrill tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Wheeler wants to control from the top but Merrill keeps moving.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Ben Wheeler wasn't active enough on the ground.
Wheeler changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Ben Wheeler is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Merrill doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Wheeler swings for the body but Merrill moves out of range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pete Merrill dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Wheeler takes a knee right on the jaw!

Merrill tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Wheeler's elbow.

Merrill lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Merrill tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Wheeler paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Wheeler throws a right and a left that Merrill avoids nicely.
Merrill lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Wheeler cracks Merrill with a right hand to the side of the head.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Merrill uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Wheeler.

Merrill has closed the distance and engaged Wheeler in a clinch.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Merrill.

Wheeler drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Wheeler is trying to drag Merrill to the mat but Merrill just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Merrill is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Wheeler is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Merrill is tapping! Great win for Wheeler!
