PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Tortuga (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones has chosen Holla If Ya Hear Me! as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tommy Tortuga!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ray Jones!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Yves DeLean and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tortuga stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Tortuga wants it to stay on the feet.
Tortuga slaps away a takedown attempt from Jones, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Jones changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Tortuga tries to avoid it but Jones manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Tortuga to the ground. Tortuga escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Tommy Tortuga has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ray Jones.
Jones tries to clinch but Tortuga is having none of it.

Tortuga has Jones up against the cage in a clinch.
Tortuga trying to land knees to the body.
Jones wants a takedown but no success here.
Jones looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Tortuga not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Tortuga has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Jones is trying to keep Tortuga in close.

Tommy Tortuga has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Horrible takedown by Jones or perhaps it was just good defense by Tortuga which made him look bad.
Jones will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Jones is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Tortuga looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Ray Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jones throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Tortuga's waist but Tortuga gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jones off to one side.

and Tortuga counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Tortuga perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Tortuga decides to return to a standing position.
Jones wants to clinch.
Jones moves to clinch but Tortuga breaks away

and Tortuga counters with a shoot takedown. Jones fights it but they end up in guard.
Tortuga tries to free his leg and advance position but Jones is retaining full guard.
Tortuga slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Tortuga passes Jones's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Jones is trying to escape back to his feet but Tortuga uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Tortuga is staying tight to Jones's torso, preventing him from escaping.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jones struggling a bit here.
Jones is letting Tortuga control him for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jones tries to clinch up

and Tortuga counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Jones has picked Tortuga up - he's going for a ride! Jones dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Tortuga is trying is best to control the position here.
Tortuga on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Tortuga tries to get out of the position.
Jones is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jones accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Tortuga manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Jones manages to get himself to full guard.
Jones looking to hit a scissor sweep but Tortuga is one step ahead there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Tortuga won't allow Jones to get back to his feet.
Jones trying to strike off his back.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Tortuga here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Jones looking for a sweep. Not yet Jones, not yet.
Tortuga is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Tortuga fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Jones tries to clinch but Tortuga moves out of range.

and Tortuga counters by moving into the clinch.
Jones changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Tortuga fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Jones shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Tortuga but Tortuga pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Jones is looking to stand back up but Tortuga counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Jones.
Tortuga content to control rather than advance.
Tortuga's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Jones tries to roll over but Tortuga keeps him under control.

Tortuga seems to be looking for submissions.

Jones is looking to get back to full guard here but Tortuga has managed to pass to side control instead.

Tortuga is trying to get an arm triangle but Jones is defending well.
Jones stops Tortuga from passing to mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Tortuga slows the pace down.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tommy Tortuga dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Jones has taken the fight to the clinch.

Tortuga breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Jones scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Tortuga regains half guard, as Jones was trying to land strikes.
Tortuga has his hands clasped together around Jones's back. He's all about the action.
Jones wants to lay and pray for a moment but Tortuga keeps working.
Tortuga might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Tortuga wants to get back to his feet.

Jones thows a huge punch but Tortuga dodges it nicely.
Jones wants to control but Tortuga is keeping him busy.
Jones wants to pass to mount but Tortuga is defending the position.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Jones wants to take a breather but Tortuga is having none of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Ray Jones was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Jones shoots in looking for a takedown. Tortuga tries to sprawl out of it but Jones keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Tortuga manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Jones fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Jones takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Jones shoots for a takedown but Tortuga saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Tommy Tortuga has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ray Jones.
Tortuga looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Jones pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Jones misses with a takedown attempt - Tortuga sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Jones closes the distance and clinches up with Tortuga, looking for a takedown. Jones pushes Tortuga against the cage but Tortuga circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Tortuga shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Jones napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Tortuga content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Tortuga decides to stand back up.
Ray Jones has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jones looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Tortuga is fending him off so far but Jones persists. Nope, Tortuga circles away and we're back to standing.
Tortuga shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Jones defends it nicely.
Jones leaves Tortuga with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Tortuga moves out of range of the body kick from Jones.

Tortuga fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Jones to the ground. Tortuga is now in Jones's guard.
Tortuga is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Tommy Tortuga is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Tommy Tortuga showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Tortuga, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
