The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomez shoots for a double leg takedown but Kharitonov sprawls well. He's pushed Gomez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Gomez moves in looking to clinch but Kharitonov pushes him off.
Gomez throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

and Gomez counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Gomez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kharitonov is just riding it out for now. Gomez eventually gives up the hold.

Gomez tries to pass the half guard into mount. Kharitonov knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Gomez uses his free foot to push down on Kharitonov's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Kharitonov.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Kharitonov drops back, looking for a kneebar! Gomez looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Gomez looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Gomez!
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Gomez is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Kharitonov has escaped the position, nice work there.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gomez is defended easily by Kharitonov.
Gomez will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Kharitonov tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Gomez paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Gomez swings around for an armbar but Kharitonov sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Gomez's guard.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Gomez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kharitonov doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kharitonov manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
