PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Deacon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Godbey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Godbey comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Back in Black kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Deacon Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Godbey!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Robert Twigg and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Godbey drives through with a takedown into guard.
Godbey wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.
Jones wants to stand up but Godbey is controlling him.
Jones keeping moving, preventing Godbey from controlling successfully.
Jones trying to keep a closed guard but Godbey is proving a slippery customer.
Jones is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Godbey passes into half guard.

Jones pushes Godbey off looking to stand but Godbey dives back in and keeps control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Godbey slips a jab and a cross from Jones.

Jones fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Godbey manages to avoid it.
Jones misses with a few strikes there.

Jones gets the takedown into side control.
Jones is breathing heavily.
You can see the frustration on Godbey's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Godbey manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jones is looking for a sweep. Godbey is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Godbey passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Jones!
Godbey looking to control but Jones is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Jones knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Godbey on the ground.
Godbey is landing with some decent strikes but Jones is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Jones is squirming around, avoiding Godbey's attempts to control the action.
Jones tries to reverse the position but Godbey maintains control.
Jones on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Jones tries to get out of the position.

Jones is trying desperately to improve position.
Godbey takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Jones tries to buck Godbey off but he can't manage it.
Godbey blocks Jones's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Jones is desperately trying to improve his position but Godbey has a good base and remains in mount.
Jones is working hard here to advance position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Godbey trying to control but Jones is having none of it.
Jones is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Jones keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A nice elbow there by Godbey.
Jones tries to reverse the position but Godbey maintains control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Deacon Jones will probably get the nod.

Jones shoots for a double leg takedown but Godbey sprawls well. He's pushed Jones's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Jones tries to clinch up but Godbey circles away and keeps his distance.

Godbey forces Jones back against the cage and clinches.

Godbey breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Deacon Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Godbey looks to land a combination but Jones avoids it well.
Jones lands with a right hand.
Jones shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Godbey pinned against the cage. Godbey gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Jones clobbers Godbey with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Godbey feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Jones's calf.

Jones misses with a takedown

and Godbey holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Deacon Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Godbey prevents Jones from breaking the clinch.

Jones is fighting off a takedown attempt but Godbey is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Jones to the mat. Jones regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Jones tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Godbey is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Jones thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Jones wants to get back to his feet.
Jones tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Godbey manages to move to mount!
Jones is wriggling around trying to escape.
Godbey avoids the attempt from Jones to control.

You get the feeling that Jones really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Jones trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Godbey wants to control the pace but Jones is squirming around nicely.
Godbey is landing with some decent strikes but Jones is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Godbey postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Jones looks a forlorn figure.

Godbey can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Jones is looking to escape.

John Godbey showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Godbey has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Jones is trying to keep an underhook but Godbey manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Jones wants to improve his position but Godbey is controlling well.
Godbey looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Godbey prevents Jones from improving his position.
Godbey lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Jones is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Jones is looking to get back to is feet but Godbey passes into side control.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Godbey creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Jones wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Jones tries to pull guard but Godbey holds him up against the cage and eventually Jones drops back down to his feet.

Jones will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Jones looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Godbey is fending him off so far but Jones persists. Nope, Godbey circles away and we're back to standing.

Jones tries to bum rush Godbey with a series of wild strikes but Godbey uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

It looks like Jones is going to stand back up.
Jones trying to advance position but Godbey counters by regaining guard.
Jones scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Godbey can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Jones controls the pace.
Jones is working Godbey over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Jones postures up in Godbey's guard and throws a big left but Godbey blocks it.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Godbey comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Godbey has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
