PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Fitch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeff Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shaw has chosen Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, John Fitch!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jeff Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Wagner Zegers and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fitch uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Shaw.
Sloppy strikes from Shaw. Those never looked like landing.
Fitch slips a jab and a cross from Shaw.
Shaw misses with a jab, cross combination.
Fitch fails with a takedown attempt.

Fitch throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shaw's waist but Shaw gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Fitch off to one side.

Shaw gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Fitch to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Fitch avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Fitch seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Shaw tries to bench press Fitch off him but Fitch keeps the position.

Fitch tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
You can see the frustration on Shaw's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Shaw manages to get back to half guard.

Shaw trying to hold on to Fitch's head to control him but Fitch postures up.

We're going to have a standup here because John Fitch wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Shaw throws a series of punches but Fitch moves out of range.
A combination from Shaw does no damage.
Shaw throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Fitch closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Shaw quickly recovers to half guard.
Fitch works his foot free and advances to mount.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shaw really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Shaw is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Fitch dominated that round.
That's time! Fitch's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Fitch walks into a straight right hand from Shaw.
Fitch fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Shaw avoids it really well and circles away.
Shaw throws a left and a right that both miss

and Fitch counters with a shoot takedown. Shaw fights it but they end up in guard.
Fitch pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Shaw is keeping the position for now.

Shaw isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Fitch stacks Shaw on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Fitch!
Shaw tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

Shaw tries to escape but Fitch has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
John Fitch overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Fitch has good solid back control here.
Fitch seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Shaw for as long as he can get away with.
Fitch has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Fitch gets his hands free as Shaw looks to control.

Fitch doesn't have the hooks in and Shaw manages to turn into his guard.
Fitch lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Shaw!
Fitch prevents Shaw from getting the reversal.
Fitch takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Shaw is working to get back to half guard.

Fitch controlling his opponent.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Fitch's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Shaw is working to get back to half guard.
Fitch tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Fitch shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Shaw pinned against the cage. Shaw gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Shaw displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Fitch.
Shaw throws a series of punches but Fitch moves out of range.
John Fitch is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Fitch has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.


It looks like John Fitch has been cut.
Fitch fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Fitch. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Fitch avoids the body shot from Shaw.
Shaw lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Fitch shoots in and drives through. Shaw sprawls well.

Fitch fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Shaw to the ground. Fitch is now in Shaw's guard.

Shaw looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Fitch passes into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shaw tries to get to full guard but Fitch has control of the leg.
Shaw wants to control but Fitch is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Fitch stops Shaw from getting back to his feet.
Shaw takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

John Fitch is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Shaw is trying to work for a sweep but Fitch has mounted him!

Shaw wants to hold on but Fitch pushes him away.
Fitch looking to control and managing it successfully.

Jeff Shaw has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The ref stands the fighters back up. John Fitch wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Shaw misses with a double jab.

I would just about give that final round to Jeff Shaw.
I think Fitch has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
