PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Charles Machida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fernando Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Charles Machida!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Fernando Maia!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Mauricio Rocha and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maia shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Machida as he avoids it easily.
Machida tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Maia manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Machida tries to clinch but Maia is having none of it.
Maia misses with a takedown attempt - Machida sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Maia walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Machida checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Fernando Maia seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Machida avoids the body shot from Maia.
Machida slips a jab and a cross from Maia.
Maia fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Charles Machida has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Fernando Maia.

Maia throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Machida was covering up waiting for the punch and Maia finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Machida wants to stand but Maia is controlling the position.

Maia drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Maia jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Maia pushing down on Machida's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Maia is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Machida is just riding it out for now. Maia eventually gives up the hold.

Maia is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Maia is taking a breather. Machida says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Machida trying to hold on to Maia's head to control him but Maia postures up.
Well, if Maia is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Maia looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Maia is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Machida sees it coming and defends easily.

Maia is looking for a kimura here.

Maia is working for a submission of some sort.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Machida is defending against the submission attempts here by Maia.
Maia is taking a breather. Machida says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Fernando Maia dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Machida keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Machida moves in looking to clinch but Maia pushes him off.
Machida doesn't manage to clinch there - Maia circles away.

Maia shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Machida napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Maia has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Machida!

Maia looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Machida really wants to buck Maia off and get back to his feet.

Maia tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Maia jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Machida manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Maia takes a little break here. Machida wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Maia tries to advance to mount but Machida denies him.
Machida tries to escape but Maia is in control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Maia tries for a kimura but Machida is defending well.
The referee asks Maia politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Maia prefers to stall for the moment though.

Maia is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Machida is trying to escape and Maia transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Machida is forced to tap! Nice work there by Maia! Very nice indeed!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Fernando Maia!
Fernando Maia seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
