PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brett MacKay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gonzalo Akanti (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). MacKay's entrance music is Step in - People under the stairs. A fine choice. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Brett MacKay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Gonzalo Akanti!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Wagner Zegers and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Akanti scores with a jab. MacKay acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Akanti gets caught flat footed, as MacKay shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Akanti being controlled here, momentarily.
MacKay wants to pass the guard but Akanti is keeping the position.
MacKay controls from within his opponent's guard.
MacKay preventing the sweep.
MacKay will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
MacKay is pushing down on Akanti's leg trying to pass to half guard. Akanti is fighting to maintain full guard but MacKay has managed to sneak the leg through.
MacKay not doing much here.

Akanti wants to control but MacKay is keeping busy and won't allow it.
MacKay is pressing down on Akanti's thigh, looking to free his foot. Akanti is holding on for now.

MacKay stands up out of the half guard.
Akanti takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Akanti comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Akanti should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

MacKay drives through with a takedown into Akanti's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
MacKay slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

MacKay avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

MacKay slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

MacKay decides to stand up, so the ref orders Akanti to his feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Akanti gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

MacKay decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

MacKay looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Akanti!
Akanti is wriggling around trying to escape.

MacKay looking to secure an arm triangle but Akanti defends it well.
Akanti tries to get back to half guard but can't.
MacKay controlling his opponent.

Akanti tries to lock up and control but MacKay gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
MacKay prevents Akanti from getting the reversal.
MacKay takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



MacKay shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Well, if MacKay is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Akanti pushes MacKay off looking to stand but MacKay dives back in and keeps control.

Akanti is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of MacKay's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take MacKay's back!

Akanti is persistently looking for the submission but MacKay is defending it well.
MacKay rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
MacKay manages to get to full guard.

MacKay kicks Akanti off and gets to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

MacKay dives in and scores a takedown into Akanti's guard.
MacKay is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
MacKay has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
MacKay really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Brett MacKay.

MacKay drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Akanti being controlled here, momentarily.
MacKay passes Akanti's left leg - he's now in half guard.
MacKay is taking a breather. Akanti says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Akanti wants to get back to full guard but MacKay has passed into side control.
MacKay controls the position.

Akanti is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on MacKay's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Brett MacKay dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Akanti tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but MacKay paws at him with a jab and circles away.

MacKay keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Akanti's efforts to push away.

Akanti manages to pull guard.

Akanti looking for subs off his back but MacKay has passed one foot through into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Brett MacKay has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Still in half guard, MacKay seems content to control.
Akanti wants to get back to full guard.
Akanti is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of MacKay's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take MacKay's back!

Akanti is trying to stick to MacKay's back but MacKay is turning into Akanti. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Akanti's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by MacKay.
MacKay is stalling in the full guard.
Akanti trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Akanti has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but MacKay has passed into side control.
MacKay remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Akanti sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Akanti gets back to full guard.
MacKay content to stall in guard here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
MacKay's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well MacKay has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
