PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Maxi Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Webcke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rodriguez comes to the cage accompanied by Eusko Abendaren Ereserkia. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Maxi Rodriguez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shane Webcke!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Gwen Towbar and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rodriguez slips under a jab.
Rodriguez defending well as Webcke loads up on a big left hand.
Rodriguez moves out of range of the strikes.

Webcke looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Webcke thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Webcke missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Webcke with the ground and pound but Rodriguez uses the opportunity to regain guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Webcke wants to pass the guard but Rodriguez is keeping the position.
Webcke is fighting to break Rodriguez's control of his arms but Rodriguez is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Webcke must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Rodriguez wants to sweep but no luck.

Rodriguez avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Webcke throws a big elbow that misses.
Rodriguez keeping moving, preventing Webcke from controlling successfully.
Webcke throws an elbow that misses. Rodriguez uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Webcke's guard. Nice move by Rodriguez!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Maxi Rodriguez.
Webcke throws an overhand right that lands on Rodriguez's shoulder, as Rodriguez tries to avoid the shot.

Webcke misses with a straight left.
Rodriguez ducks under a wild hook from Webcke.
Webcke feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Rodriguezs jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Webcke looks to land a right hand but Rodriguez moved out of range.
Rodriguez fails with a takedown attempt.

Webcke gets the takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Webcke throws a strike aimed at the side of Rodriguez's head but Rodriguez avoids it well.
Webcke throwing strikes but Rodriguez manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!

You can see the frustration on Webcke's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Webcke can do anything to dispel that myth.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Rodriguez looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Webcke tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Rodriguez presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Rodriguez wants to control the pace but Webcke is squirming around nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shane Webcke dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Webcke ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Rodriguez moves away.
Rodriguez moves out of range of the strikes.
Webcke misses with a left hand

and Rodriguez counters with a shoot takedown. Webcke fights it but they end up in guard.
Webcke is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Rodriguez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Rodriguez moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
A jab from Webcke does it's job there.
Webcke might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Rodriguez moves away from the strike by Webcke.
Webcke connects with a good right hand that stumbles Rodriguez. Rodriguez circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Webcke lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Webcke throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Webcke waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Rodriguez.
Webcke throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Nice takedown defense from Webcke. No joy for Rodriguez on that attempt.
Webcke throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Rodriguez sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Webcke shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rodriguez as he jumps to the side.

so Rodriguez counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Webcke trying to keep a closed guard but Rodriguez is proving a slippery customer.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

and Rodriguez counters by moving into the clinch.
Rodriguez avoiding damage.
Rodriguez goes for a takedown in the clinch but Webcke prevents it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rodriguez is pushing Webcke up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Rodriguez seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression.
The ref breaks the fighters up, due to lack of action by Maxi Rodriguez.
Webcke throws a right and a left that both miss.
A big left from Rodriguez misses.
Webcke throws a jab when Rodriguez was well out of range.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Webcke is defended easily by Rodriguez.
Maxi Rodriguez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shane Webcke.
Rodriguez slips a straight right by Webcke.
Webcke drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Webcke shoots in and drives through. Rodriguez sprawls well.
Webcke's corner calls for a 1-2. Webcke obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

A telegraphed right hand from Webcke misses the target.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Webcke throws a hook but Rodriguez avoids it easily.
Some wild striking there from Webcke.
Webcke lunges at Rodriguez with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Rodriguez's hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Shane Webcke will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Webcke loads up on a big right hand but Rodriguez slips the punch.
Webcke throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rodriguez's waist but Rodriguez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Webcke off to one side.
Webcke looks to land a left hand but Rodriguez moved out of range nicely.

Rodriguez closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Webcke is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Rodriguez has latched onto it... Big trouble! Rodriguez pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Webcke is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Rodriguez!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:39 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Maxi Rodriguez!
Maxi Rodriguez decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
