PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Gustav Gustafsson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Foe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gustafsson comes into the arena with Dark Tranquility - The Final Resistance blaring out of the sound system. Joe Foe is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Gustav Gustafsson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joe Foe!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Hugh Johnson and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Foe shoots for a takedown but Gustafsson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Gustafsson throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Foe has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Foe there as he acknowledges the shot.


It looks like Joe Foe has been cut.
Foe drops his hands momentarily and Gustafsson takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Gustafsson throws out a loose jab but Foe uses good head movement to avoid it.
Foe tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gustafsson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Foe somewhat.

Foe tries to keep at a distance but Gustafsson has taken the fight into the clinch.

Gustafsson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Gustafsson throws a right hand that Foe ducks under and follows up with a left that Foe also avoids with ease.

Gustafsson gets a double leg takedown into Foe's guard.
Foe looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Foe is trying to control the position but Gustafsson postures up.

Gustafsson lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Foe at a distance.
Foe takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Foe shoots in but Gustafsson avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Gustav Gustafsson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Foe.
Gustafsson throws a right and a left that Foe avoids nicely.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gustafsson is on top in guard.

Foe pulls Gustafsson in close to his closed guard and prevents Gustafsson from doing any damage or advancing position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Foe looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Gustafsson trying to control but Foe is working from the bottom.
Gustafsson would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Gustafsson is fighting to break Foe's control of his arms but Foe is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

We're going to have a standup here because Gustav Gustafsson wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Gustafsson rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Foe moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Gustafsson throws a nice looking combination but Foe bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Foe tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gustafsson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Foe somewhat.
Foe closes the distance and clinches up with Gustafsson, looking for a takedown. Foe pushes Gustafsson against the cage but Gustafsson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Foe shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Gustafsson sprawls well. Gustafsson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Foe gets slowly back to his feet.

Foe shoots in but Gustafsson avoids the takedown attempt easily.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Gustafsson gets caught flat footed, as Foe shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Foe is fighting to break Gustafsson's control of his arms but Gustafsson is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Foe postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Foe changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gustafsson tries to avoid it but Foe manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gustafsson to the ground. Gustafsson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Foe throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Foe is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gustafsson defends it well.

Foe looks to land a strike but Gustafsson avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Foe thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Foe throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Gustafsson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Gustafsson looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Foe throws a big elbow that misses.
Foe trying to control the position from guard on top but Gustafsson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Joe Foe has got the better of the ground game so far.
Foe missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Foe stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gustafsson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Foe postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Foe shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gustav Gustafsson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Foe.

Gustafsson wants to clinch up but Foe keeps it at a distance.
Gustafsson throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Foe stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Foe closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Gustafsson thuds a left hand into Foe's body.
Foe doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Gustafsson ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Foe moves away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Foe looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Gustafsson bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Foe's head backwards.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gustafsson tries to bum rush Foe with a series of wild strikes but Foe uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Foe throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gustafsson's waist but Gustafsson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Foe off to one side.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Gustav Gustafsson will probably get the nod.

Foe can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Gustafsson is looking to escape.
Foe takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Foe has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Gustafsson is trying desperately to improve position.

Gustafsson is in a horrible position here. Foe smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
