PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mike Dweller (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anthony J (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Anthony J is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Mike Dweller!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Anthony J!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Steven Brown and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dweller tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

J scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Dweller tries to improve position but can't.

J decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Dweller tries to clinch but J moves out of range.

J rushes Dweller and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

J successfully pulls guard.
J controlling the position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now J is on top in guard.
J must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
J preventing the sweep.
J controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
J would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
J wants to control from the top but Dweller keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Dweller is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Dweller not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Dweller avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
J stopping the sweep attempt from Dweller.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

J shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than J was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
J controlling the position easily from mount.
J's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Dweller is squirming around, avoiding J's attempts to control the action.
Dweller tries to hold on but J pushes him away.

Dweller is desperately trying to improve his position but J has a good base and remains in mount.
J wants to stand but Dweller is holding on to him, trying to stop him posturing up.
J looks gassed!
J can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Dweller is looking to escape.
Dweller is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
J should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
J trying to control but he's not successful this time.
J tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Dweller wants to get back to his feet.

J stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Dweller throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Dweller buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Dweller feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
J tries to land a sweep but no joy.
J is trying to control the position but Dweller postures up.
J tries to land a sweep but no joy.
J wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Dweller stopping the sweep attempt from J.
J lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Dweller!

J controlling the pace for now.

J stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

J darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
J takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

J is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Dweller has managed to free his arm - good work.
J wants to stand up but Dweller has a hold of him and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Anthony J dominated that round.
That's time! Dweller's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



J has closed the distance and engaged Dweller in a clinch.
J is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
J fails to pull guard.
Dweller wants to break the clinch but can't.
Dweller has J pushed against the cage.

J jumps into guard, dragging Dweller to the mat.
J is trying to keep Dweller in close.
J is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Dweller is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

J is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
J performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
J trying to control the action but Dweller is working from the bottom.
Well, if J is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Let's hope that J has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Despite being in the dominant position, Anthony J just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
J misses with a jab, cross combination.
Dweller closes the distance but J moves to the side

and J counters with a shoot takedown. Dweller fights it but they end up in guard.
J wants to pass the guard but Dweller is keeping the position.

J stands up and waves to Dweller to follow him.

J fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Dweller sprawls well initially but J persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Dweller is trying to get back to full guard.

Dweller manages to get to full guard.
Dweller is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
J stopping the sweep attempt from Dweller.
J stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Dweller swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
J tries for a takedown but Dweller circles away easily
and Dweller counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. J is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Mike Dweller has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Anthony J.

Dweller is pulling down on J's head to control his posture.

J trying to control the position from guard on top but Dweller is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Dweller has his feet on J's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Dweller tries to clinch but J is having none of it.

J shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
J forces his way into half guard.
Dweller is looking for a sweep. J is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Anthony J has got the better of the ground game so far.
J content to control rather than advance.

J is working for a submission of some sort.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Anthony J showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Dweller will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Dweller gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and J holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Dweller looking to throw knees to the head but J is blocking nicely.

J breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
J fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

J scores with a takedown into Dweller's guard.
Dweller is trying to control the position but J postures up.
Dweller will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
J won't allow Dweller to sweep him here.
J takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Dweller is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Dweller in particular looking to stall.
J is refusing to be controlled, as Dweller sits in half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if J can do anything to dispel that myth.

Dweller not doing much here.
Dweller is looking to advance position but J won't allow it.
Dweller is keen to just control but J is a slippery customer.
J tries to get to full guard but Dweller has control of the leg.

J pushes Dweller off and gets back to his feet.
J looks to clinch

and Dweller counters by clinching up.
Dweller drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Dweller is looking to break free of the clinch but J has double underhooks.

J drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Dweller gets the underhooks and prevents it.
J wants to stall.
J landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
J taking a break, stalling in the clinch.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Dweller.

J decides to pull guard.
J is controlling Dweller's posture.

J is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

J pulls Dweller in to control the position.

J escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Dweller gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Dweller trying to control the position from guard on top but J is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Dweller slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
J prevents Dweller from improving position.
J wants to get back to his feet but Dweller drags him back down.
Dweller lands a few punches from side control.

What's J going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.
Dweller wants to stand but J is controlling his arm.
J manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Dweller wants to stand but J has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Dweller is looking to take a break and control but J is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Dweller is thwarting J's attempts to control the position.
J is trying to get back to full guard.
Mike Dweller has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
J gets back to full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Anthony J comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
