Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Demon Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kengo Watanabe!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Kenichi Hosakawa and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Maia is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Watanabe's half guard.
Maia is looking to advance position but Watanabe won't allow it.
Maia looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Maia moves nicely into side control.
The ground and pound from Maia seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Watanabe tries to buck Maia off but Maia is having none of it.
Watanabe is trying to control Maia's posture but Maia avoids it.
Maia moves into full mount!
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Watanabe can do anything to dispel that myth.

Maia can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Watanabe is looking to escape.

Watanabe is squirming around, avoiding Maia's attempts to control the action.
Maia is landing with some decent strikes but Watanabe is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.


It looks like Kengo Watanabe has been cut.

Maia moves to the back.
Watanabe is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Maia off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.

Maia is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Watanabe knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Watanabe for a finish.
Watanabe really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Maia. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Maia connects with a big shot to the side of Watanabe's head.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Maia is persistently looking for the submission but Watanabe is defending it well.

Watanabe must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Maia is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Watanabe is trying to escape the mount but Maia keeps good control and instead manages to take Watanabe's back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Maia is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Watanabe can do to turn this around?

Maia has his opponent pinned against the ropes, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Watanabe's face.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
